IM On Blackjack II

Ok, weird question. The builtin IM features (msn, yahoo, etc)...does it cost data, text messages, or both to use them? Is there a way to get it to use just one or the other if it uses both? Any other particular information about this?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, I've looked online and can't come up with a defninitive answer. I always thought it took both, but in reality I don't know.

It's OZ Messenger. I haven't used it because I know that the last time I tried OZ Messenger, it was solely text messaging and I only have data.

If you want IM over data, I recommend using Palringo (a free app supporting all major clients, found at palringo.com)

If you want text, I know AIM offers limited support via their network directly, but I'd say to sign into OZ Messenger (the built in one) once then check your messaging and data usages. Whichever goes up is your answer.

If the built in one is using text messaging, however, it would then be limited only to ATT and any other provider that uses their code for messages.

Yep, that's what I though. Thanks for being the guinea pig :)

Get Palringo if you want data messaging. It's a great app that's currently under heavy development and is only getting better. Works very well on the BJII.

I'm considering getting a data package...the only one I see is the unlimited package for $30/month though. What do y'all reccomend?

EDIT: Has anybody figured out if you can legally tether with the unlimited data plan? I know there's a tethering plan, but that only includes 5gb of transfer ANYWAY, AND it's $60 instead of $30 :)

EDIT2: How much data does parlingo use (in data saving mode)? Ie, does it warrant getting a data plan alone (given moderate to heavy usage) or not?

If you play to transfer more than a couple hundred mb, I would strongly recommend you get the tethering plan. You can tether without the plan so long as you're not using it too often or too much. If you're download huge amounts of data, you'll need a plan.

Data packages, it depends on how much you use it. If you get the MediaNet unlimited plan and you don't use too much data, you should be fine. Otherwise, you'll need the PDA Unlimited plan.

Palringo only uses a few hundred kilobytes, depending on usage. The only reason it would use more than that (aside from using it alot) would be the updating system. There's no way to turn off auto-updates, so that takes data too.

Wait a second, aren't both the MediaNet _unlimited_ and the PDA _unlimited_ packages.....unlimited? What's the difference in them besides the fact that the MediaNet package is half the price? (Also, if it's unlimited, what's the deal with tethering? I mean, why are you able to do it for no additional charge without the tethering plan? It's also kinda crap because the tethering plan only has 5gb of transfer, but it costs twice as much per month :))

Also, you said it uses a few hundred kilobytes depending on usage. That's....per month?

Thanks!

Sorry, on a moderate to low usage, Palringo will use a few hundred kbs a day. This will also go up if you're in a low-signal area, requiring it to reconnect frequently.

The data plans are incredibly confusing, but go with what I said. If you want to play it safe, just get the best of each. If you take a risk and get the medianet unlimited plan, you might get slapped with overages and fees for having the 'wrong plan.' ATT's incredibly annoying with this, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. If you're using it a lot, get the best possible without question. If it's only moderate usage, it's still a gamble and they might slap you with overages anyway, but it's an option.
