Guest petec500 Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 It seems i cant do anything with my Touch these days without it running "critically low on storage memory". I've just downloaded the two cab files for CompactFramework 3.5 and to run the second one, i had to delete loads of stuff just to get it to install. I've uninstalled loads of programmes that i'd really rather not have (e.g. TomTom, Google, Windows Live) and deleted anything that i cant see as essential (all photos, music - everything like that stored on Storage Card). I've deleted all temp files and history from Internet Explorer too. After all this - i still have only 3.63MB Storage Memory (14.06MB Program Memory). I was about to re-install the latest CamerAware3, but i know that's going to cause me problems too with low memory. I'm at my wits end with this! So, i'm considering doing a total rebuild, i.e. restore to original settings, which i believe will delete anything that's not essential. Anyone confirm this? I've installed then uninstalled loads of software in the past, so i can only imagine there's loads of junk left lying around the system that isn't needed anymore. One thing i am worried about is losing all my Orange settings for Internet, MMS etc. How do i find these to back them up, even on paper for re-entering later? Any other options i have? All suggestions gratefully received.
Guest mandt Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 It is possible you have some junk lying dormant, Try installing ClearTemp (To the card :) ) to do a bit of maintenance. A Hard-reset and rebuild can sometimes be a good thing IMO, If you're well prepared you can do it and get back to where you were in only an hour or so I'd also recommend applying the PagePool tweak to give yourself a bit of extra memory too, I did it with mine and it helped a lot Re your MMS settings If you create an account with HTC E-Club then browse to My Download - Other Downloads, then the HTC P3600 section there is a Network Setup Wizard to make things really easy Hope this helps somewhat, the Touch is a great device, but now and again it could do with a little extra memory
Guest petec500 Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Many thanks for this. Using ClearTemp, FreeupRAM, AutoClean and everything else i could think of, i managed to get Storage Memory down to 83% used, but then i installed TTN6 again and it's gone right up to 100% now!! I'm going to give the page pool tweak a go, but if that doesnt' help, i'm going to hard-reset and rebuild. Thanks also for the tip about HTC Club - downloaded that too! Is there anything else i should backup before a rebuild? Obviously my contacts/calendar are syncronised with Outlook, so i wont lose them.
Guest jimbouk Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 You are installing all these non-essential apps to your storage card?
Guest petec500 Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 You are installing all these non-essential apps to your storage card? Absolutely! Every single application that i've loaded has been to the Storage Card whenever possible. Update: I've done the 4MB page pool tweak, but was disappointed to see that's given me 4MB more Program Memory (now running at 60% full), but no more Storage Memory, which is what i'm running low on. What else can i do to free up Storage Memory????
Guest jimbouk Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Have you got some big email attachments still in main memory? (even if you now store them on sd card, it wont have deleted the previous folder). I would also look to make sure you have saved some big pics/movies/music files in main memory. Have you got a nav program that is storing map tiles etc in main memory?

Have you got a nav program that is storing map tiles etc in main memory? I cleared out all my SMS and MMS messages this morning (inbox and sent) and managed to reclaim another 2MB - now 79% free, probably enough to re-install TTN6. Other than this, i've been through my entire directory structure looking for large files. Interestingly, excluding the Windows directory, all the other directories only add up to about 3MB, so that means about 21MB is in the Windows directory alone. The other large file i have is the pim.vol containing all my contacts and calendar appointments. Even after deleting many of my old contacts, i've only managed to reduce this from 2.42 to 2.17MB, so i'm guessing there's loads of other stuff in there. Perhaps i'll delete it then re-sync with my work Outlook.
Guest jimbouk Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Won't tomtom install on the storage card?
Guest petec500 Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 Won't tomtom install on the storage card? Good point. It doesn't seem to come up with an option to install on device or SD card, but it seems to immediately swallow 2MB of Storage Memory. On investigating this further with SKTools again, i found the main executable TTN6 file under Program Files on the device - 2.1MB. I've just tried totally uninstalling TTN6, deleting all relevant files from both the device and the SD, then re-installing it, but it still didn't give me the option of where to install it. I dont really understand the difference between Storage Memory and Program Memory though - installing TTN6 swallowed up Storage, even though it's a program!!?? After a bit of playing around with SKTools, using Clean, Optimize etc., i've managed to get the Storage Memory down to 74% even with TTN6 installed, so i think i'll stop at that. Might even start trying to re-install some of the software i took off, like Windows Live.
Guest jimbouk Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 There is a danger that people get carried away and obsessed with memory space...
Guest chucky.egg Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 True, but you can see why when many devices are really under-spec'd and most still have the 128/64 memory limits that we've had for years now. At the end of the day free memory is wasted - if you're not using it for apps (and getting the benefits there) then what are you going to use it for?
Guest jimbouk Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 I agree... although logic dictates that having enough free memory to avoid "low memory" messages is a must. Ironic that devices start to come with higher program and storage memory when we can now buy 8gb sdhc cards...
Guest petec500 Posted February 26, 2008 Report Posted February 26, 2008 I dont understand why they're still limiting these devices with such pityful memory when it's so much cheaper these days. I recently paid just over £40 for an 8GB card - crazy when you think not so long ago i paid more than twice that for half a gig!
