Data connection remains on after picking up email?

Hi Guys,

This is prbably really basic stuff, but I have just upgraded to a Touch Dual from an spv c550.

I have set up my orange email account so that I receive text alerts when a new message arrives, and I can then manually Receive it on the phone if I want to. When I do this, and the message has been transferred, the data connection seems to remain active - I only noticed to my horror that there was a timer when you press on the G or similar icon to the top of the screen - Did this mean I am paying for a data connection that Im not using for this time?

Is it possible for the phone to just get the email and log off as it were so that I dont need to manually disconnect?

Many thanks,

TOUCHDUAL

I don't think I do have a data tariff as I am such a light user - Is there a way of making it disconnect once it has finished getting the email?

tap on the data connection symbol on the title bar and tap disconnect...should do the trick

Yes this is a feature of Pocket PC as opposed to Smartphone. I learned to get used to it after switching from Smartphone to Pocket PC, though it can be quite useful as you don't have to reconnect again if you want to do some internet browsing after checking your email :D

Although it keeps the conection alive, you're not transmitting any data, so won't get charged :D

Thanks for the replies thus far. Are you sure you wont get charged, because it could be a very expensive experiment to find out!

Absolutely

On the Dual you only need to hold the red key anyway and select 'terminate data connection' easy peasy :D

As Mandt says GPRS is only charged for data not connection.

Its similar to your home broadband, in that it can stay connected all day without using any data - unlike a modem where you pay for a call to the exchange.

The only risk with GPRS is if you have an app that automatically uses data.

With Orange Pop email, the trick is to set it to only download 2 or 5kb of the message. That saves you getting billed more when a mate sends you huge files and long emails. You can always get the rest of an important message if you need it - by cliking the link at the bottom of the email.
