Guest greybucket Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 Ok, I downloaded MoDaCo.SmartphoneGPSActivator.COM4 and also Microsoft_Smartphone_GPSID_Settings. I installed Google Maps and it seems to be working ok. I do not have the Telenav monthly plan purchased and shouldnt be able to use the GPS... does this mean that the patch works? Second thing is, am I being charged for using the GPS going this route? I was under the impression that by bypassing the Telenav program, I was bypassing the subscription service to it as well. Third thing, How do I disable connecting to medianet so i don't accrue data usage fees? If I disabled medianet, would I still be able to make phone calls and send and receive text msg's?

For Google Maps, you do not need any patches. Google maps doesn't need the GPS to be binded to a COM port and works just fine without either of the patches. Second thing is, am I being charged for using the GPS going this route? I was under the impression that by bypassing the Telenav program, I was bypassing the subscription service to it as well. You are not being charged for using GPS, but Google Maps uses data to load the maps. If you don't have a data plan, you will need a mapping solution that stores the data to your device's memory, probably in a storage card. I would recommend Garmin Mobile XT as a solution for that. Third thing, How do I disable connecting to medianet so i don't accrue data usage fees? If I disabled medianet, would I still be able to make phone calls and send and receive text msg's? Take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=251819 Or another option would be to go to Start - Settings - Connections - GPRS and delete the medianet connection. This may still incur some charges though. And no, it won't affect text messages or phone calls, but it may stop you from being able to place video calls.
Guest greybucket Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 I downloaded and installed NOGPRS. I can't get to anything in IE which is good. I also deleted medianet under GPRS connections. Google Maps still works. So is Google Maps still accessing a data connection?

It normally uses a considerably small cache of places you've previously loaded into Google Maps, but if you go somewhere it doesn't have cached, it'll try to load from the net. If it can't get it from the net, then it should show unloaded images. If it does load those images, then it is still access the internet...

In case you dont have testmode turned on, find testmode.exe in your windows folder and create a shortcut and place it in your start menu folder. Edited March 3, 2008 by Dog8myphone
Guest greybucket Posted March 4, 2008 Report Posted March 4, 2008 No testmode.exe in windows folders. Guess it doesn't matter though, I ran google maps on my way to work and it kept saying that it requires a data connection. All is well.
