Howto: Add your own volume profiles

I just figured this out for myself after some poking around in the registry and googling. Hopefully this will help someone else who was in my shoes looking for an answer to this little problem. I wanted to add another profile to my phone since I didn't think the 5 defaults were enough. Here's the steps I took to do this:

1: Software unlock the phone. Follow the steps outlined here (pasted for easy reading)

NOTICE: Step 0 is ONLY for FIDO / Canadian users. If your phone is from another carrier, then start at step 1. For all phones, perform steps 1-3.

0. FIDO / CANADIAN USERS ONLY! Download THIS; extract the contents, run the exe, connect your phone and perform the unlock. Then RESTART YOUR PHONE, then proceed to the normal unlocking methods below:

1. ALL OTHER USERS: DOWNLOAD THIS (unlock patch)

2. Copy the cab to your phone and run it. Install to DEVICE if asked where to install.

3. Shutdown and restart your phone.

2: Download and install a registry editor. I used this one.

3: Open the registry editor and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Profiles\. These keys are the entries in the profile list for the existing profiles.

4: Create a new key here and call it whatever you want to call your new profile. I used "Work".

5: Browse to the Loud key and view the values (press the Values soft key).

6: Copy each of the three values from the Loud key to the key you made earlier.

7: Browse back to your key that you just pasted values in to. You should see three values when you hit the values soft key: LocName, Name and Order.

8: Open up LocName and change the value data from "Outdoor" to your profile name (again I used "Work"). Press done.

9: Open up Name and change the value data from "Outdoor" to your profile name, as you did in the previous step.

10: Open up Order and change the value data to 6 (if this is the first profile you've added). There are 5 default profiles that come with the phone and we need to specify the order that our new one come in on the list. You could probably re-order the existing profiles by modifying each one's Order value. For now though, stick with 6.

11: Close the registry editor. Verify that your new profile is in the profile list (Quick List, etc.). If it isn't in there, re-check your work in the previous steps.

12: Plug your phone in to a computer or connect to one via bluetooth. (You may be able to complete the following with a file manager on your phone but it is simpler to use a PC.

13: Browse to your phone and go to \Application Data\Profiles. Copy Normal.prof.xml to your PC and rename it [ProfileName].prof.xml. Mine was called Work.prof.xml. Copy the file you just renamed to your phone in \Application Data\Profiles.

14: On your phone, go to your profile list and select your new profile. Edit it to your liking!

That's it! A little complicated but not too difficult. Special thanks to randyrants.com which happened to be one of the first hits from google that finally pointed me in the right direction.

Edit: I have discovered that if your PC has Vista, the above steps are all you need to do, but if you have XP you will need Total Commander on your phone. Follow all the above steps and then run Total Commander. Browse to the xml file you created and go to properties. Then go down to the system attribute and set it on.
