No data plan, what can I get away with?

Hey Guys,

New to the forum and new to AT&T! I'm an 18 year old web geek workin' in Hawaii and I just signed up for my first very own phone plan. Most of you are probably thinking "Oh god no, you've already sold your soul to the deathstar" haha, but it's exciting for me.

Anyways. I went with Letstalk.com and scored a free Blackjack II. I chose the 900 minute rollover plan and unlimited texting. I didn't choose any data plans or anything (plan on upgrading to an iPhone in June after WWDC)

I'm a hacker kind of guy. I run linux on all my servers, code all day, hack anything that I own and can hack without pissing anyone off. Not trying to seem cocky with that statement, just leads to my next point :D

I've installed the GPS hack for COM4 and have been playing with Windows Live for a little while. Will get around to installing Google Maps in a little while.

My main question is, what kind of things can I get away with doing? Will using Windows Live charge me for data usage? How does all that stuff work. I am also under the impression that using AIM will use up text messages (of which I have an infinite amount) so I'm not worried about that, but correct me if I am wrong.

I dont know about AT&T but where I am from all data is charged and people get a really nasty shock if they use out-of-tariff data for windows live etc.

As far as I know, anytime you download anything from the net, if you see the phone downloading "X-amount of K'bytes," you can/will get charged for it...'bytes downloaded without a plan will add up very, very quickly!

I really, really suggest that you call AT&T, or go down to the local shop, and check on that.

I have been an AT&T plan holder for years, and I can say with confidence that they will charge you for everything. Texting, using any messager (which can be SMS or K'bytes), downloading anything, or even checkng their MediaNet, it all costs K'bytes of information. And it adds up fast, when I was younger I racked up over 50 dollars once not paying attention. AT&T offers a 35$ a month unlimited data plan that is wonderful, you have complete access to everything the phone offers and then some, If you really want to get your money's worth from the phone, suck it up and pay the 35$ a month, other wise you can be stuck which one painful bill.

Windows Live can use a lot of data and Google Maps certainly will. Without a data plan you will be charged.

A lot.

LOL thought that was funny.

Anyways, no matter how much you "hack", you will be paying out the ass for data. I would highly recommend getting a data plan. If not, then why have a BJ? Get an old RAZR and just txt and call...nothing else.

I'm waiting for the next-gen iPhone in june and decided to go with the BJ2 because letstalk.com (the place I ordered my crap from) was gonna give it to me free of charge, no rebates. The qwerty kb alone makes it a better phone than a razr. Plus, Motorola is crap (I came from a Krzr on verizon).

One thing to learn with Apple, they aren't going to confirm product release or product features until they decide to bring it out.

Yep, I wouldn't go downloading anything before you check.

Just looking at this, they will charge you $5/MB over their limit if you have a PDA plan, so I can only imagine the cost if you aren't on any kind of data plan at all :S

no solution on ATT that I know of.

Tmobile has a great 5.99 deal, where you can setup proxies and get the whole internet, IM, email everything. The only limit i know on that is that some ports are not open and downloads of >1 mb are not allowed. I wish they had something cheap like that for ATT. The cheapest i believe is their MediaNet plan - its like 20 bucks and month.

What about Modaco's own nodata.cab to disable GPRS?
