You can't see it from Active Sync for some reason. i was using file explorer to try to find GPStest.exe and it isn't on my phone, is there like a download i need to do or what???? Help please

Guest dtphantom Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 A quick search here at Modaco: http://www.modaco.com/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=870443 I know how to do it on my computer, i want to know how to enable seeing hidden files and folders from within the phone so I don't have to sync it to my computer.
Guest smfa1965 Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 Download and install Resco Explorer. You get a free trial and you'll be able to show all files, hidden, system whatever. Get it here: Resco Explorer 2007 for Smartphone As far as I know, the built-in File explorer doesn't have the option to view hidden files, unless there's a reg hack of some sort.

Guest smfa1965 Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 You don't. That's why you install Resco. Once you say show all files, the program will continue to work after the trial period. But, you won't be able to change the rights back or do much of anything else but view and launch the files. As I said, perhaps there's a hack to allow the built in File Explorer the capability to show hidden files, but I haven't looked into it as Resco works just fine.
Guest JeepinCalifornia Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 (edited) This GPStest? http://chartcross.co.uk/products/WM00002_details.asp Assuming the program has been installed on the phone/card, a special file manager to launch GPStest or view [the] exe files is not needed. If the GPStest icon wasn't placed in the Start Menu: navigate to \device (or to storage card\), then to \progamfiles\chartcross\gpstest\bin, in there is GPStest.exe Edited April 5, 2008 by JeepinCalifornia

Guest JeepinCalifornia Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 That is not the same GPS Test that is included in the blackjack II, but works just as well. I hadn't realized one came on the phone... Then I, too, must ask where this gpstest.exe is located!
Guest smfa1965 Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 (edited) It is located in the \Windows directory on the phone, but by default it is a hidden file. Thus, the reason you need to load Resco Explorer and turn on View Hidden files. Once you do this, you'll be able to find the gpstest.exe file in the Windows directory. There is also another program called GPSTest, which works very well and is free. The link for it is in the above post. Ooops, hehe. You were the one that posted the link!! Sorry. :D Edited April 5, 2008 by smfa1965

Sorry. :D Ok but in TheLostSoul's tip thread under getting GPS to work he says you need to use a program that uses the GPS intermediate driver - doesn't the chartcross GPSTest program require COM ports? I'm trying to figure out if I need to install the hack or not. I just hard resetted and my goal is to get both google maps and garmin XT working flawlessly. Any advice would be appreciated.
Guest JeepinCalifornia Posted April 6, 2008 Report Posted April 6, 2008 Aha! I see it now; Total Commander, FWIW, also sees that "hidden" file... Thanks for the info. :D
Guest dshap Posted April 6, 2008 Report Posted April 6, 2008 how come when I plug my phone into my computer and go to windows explorer to explore the windows folder of my phone, I can see hidden files but gpstest.exe is not there...??? Are you guys sure this is a utility that comes with WM6 or does the chartcross GPSTest program put that "gpstest.exe" in your windows folder when you install it?

Ok I gused the resco trial to make a shortcut to it. How do I know if it works? How long should it take?

I'll have to re-read that section there (and probably re-write it) but what I meant was that I recommend using applications that don't require a hack. This includes applications such as Garmin and Google Maps, which are both able to use the intermediate driver and should work on your phone right out of the box. If you find that neither work and you need to use another application, then you should perform a hard reset (again) and keep doing so until it starts working. Remember, it is always possible that your GPS is working fine yet still have it take 5 or more minutes to get a signal. GPS signals are incredibly dependant on weather conditions and so many other factors, that it can take anywhere between under a minute to about 10 minutes to get a signal. At everyone still trying to find the included GPStest application, simply open notepad, type the following: 22#"\windows\gpstest.exe" Then save it as "GPSTest.lnk" and put it in your \Windows\Start Menu. Don't forget to disable "Hide file extensions" and to make sure there is no .txt at the end of the file. Basically, if you can double click it on your PC and have it open notepad, it (probably) still ends in .txt.

Before I hard-resetted I was using the hack with the chartcross GPS program and I found that the best way to get google maps working with GPS was to first start chartcross, get that to get a fix, and then launch google. If i simply launched google, it would say "seeking satellites" for a while and then just cancel automatically/time out (i.e. "Use GPS" would uncheck itself). According to your advice, I shouldn't use the hack if I don't need to, but I have no program like chartcross GPS that works on the windows driver that can give me instant/continuous feedback about the status of my GPS. What do you personally do for your GPS solution? Say you want to get google maps up with GPS, what is your process? do you do the hack/initial chartcross GPStest approach? or do you just launch google maps and wait in the dark as it says "seeking GPS satellites (0)" for x minutes? How about garmin? I tried the included \windows\gpstest.exe but nothing happened. maybe I need to hard reset and try again. should that program give me instant feedback just like the chartcross GPStest if it is working properly or could it take several minutes before anything changes in it? thanks so much for the help.
