Resco releases its brand new application – Resco Backup

After big success of its backup application for Palm OS, Resco announced today the availability of Resco Backup for the PocketPC platform.

In addition to the standard functionality such as manual or scheduled backup, partial backup/ restore, compression or encryption, Resco Backup offers many superior features such as:

· Incremental (differential) backup beats any other backup product in terms of speed.

· Backup profiles (called projects) enable backups of selected data such as messages, contacts etc.

· Ability to verify backup or check backup set integrity

· Tools for backup analysis, e.g. performing a comparison between the device and stored backup set or between any two backup sets.

· Backup sets can have comments, icons or can be pinned - excluded from the update cycle.

It is highly recommended for anyone who does not like to lose precious data.

Allow me to announce v1.20, which is the 4th iteration since the mentioned initial release. At the same time this version is a kind of a milestone and we are considering possible paths for the further product improvement. This is the reason I am asking for your help.

As far I can evaluate RB:

- Incremental update offers a huge advantage in terms of speed.

- Possibility to verify backup results gives additional level of trust.

- It offers tools for analysis of the device changes and even of the differences between 2 backups.

- It is relatively small when compared to other backup solutions, so that more users can afford to store it in the main memory.

Concerning the speed, I'd like to hear your opinion. As a matter of fact our measurements on several devices showed that RB usually delivers the fastest times, but I got also a report that the restore part was 2x slower than SPB. (We could not confirm that, hence the result is apparently installation-specific.)

Exactly this type of observation is very important for us - but only then when we know the reason. Such reason can be for example huge e-mail DB.

There are a lot of things that could be added, such as exclude rules, FTP, registry-related tools etc. (Those who missed desktop unpack tool will find it on the Resco web site.) It would be great if you could share your point of view.

Incremental backup via FTP definitely appeals to me, perhaps even emailing the backups?

AppToDate support in a tool will help swing my choice :D

In all honesty I have used Sprite, Resco and SPB at one time or another and having used both Sprite and Resco in an emergency, both are very competent products. I've always been a fan of Resco's UIs, but then Sprite has never let me down.

Decisions :(

Thanks, Paul.

FTP is really an option - we have done it on Palm OS - incrementally and using kind of transaction support. Even a Diff between local and remote set was included.

I am just not sure about the audience, but if enough users show their interest, we'll do it.

I looked at AppToDate specs and I am not sure that it fully covers our needs, e.g. the conditionally free upgrades. Besides, we have an Updater that includes richer information, for example the product information.
