Trapster!

This originally was a "Help Me get Trapster working" thread, but I remedied the problem by editing the program's GPS registry value from "0" to "1" so it would recognize the GPS...so I got it working. Now, if only many more GPS-enabled phone users would use it!

If you've a GPS phone and drive too fast, check it out: http://www.trapster.com/rl/Trapster.php

It's a real-time Live Speed-trap, Camera Trap (and the like) "Warning System" for the U.S.; great for commuters like me who drive a little too fast! One receives--and can send--warnings via your phone to the Trapster system that will in-turn notify those users--through SMS/email--in the area who are within their configured settings of Speed/Camera Traps (ie: a 1 mile radius or whatever).

There is even a Trapster "add-on" for Google Maps, so even if you don't want to use the system while traveling with your phone, you can see the Traps that have been submitted and submit your own via your PC. The more users who utilize this, the more effective it is, of couse...

Actually, all you needed to do was open the settings and set it to GPS only as it defaults to "both" and it should work like that...

Thanks for the reply. That's actually what the instructions said, too. In settings, however, it wouldn't even let me highlight over "Both" or "GPS," let alone let me check the selection box - it was stuck on "WiFi," before the registry tweak. After the fix, though, I can choose either of the three... :D

Hmm, I didn't have that problem....works fine for me...

Anyway, thanks for this thread, didn't know about this app until now, seems like a cool feat to have :(

I'm a little impressed with the response time. After watching the video, I had to see for myself(!): I got onto Google Maps on my PC and using the Trapster view/map/plug-in, or what ever it should be called, I sent a Live Police Report from my phone (I get a good lock even in my house) and within seconds the alert was on Google Maps... :D

heh, good to hear, but this begs the question....how many reports on the service are of people "just testing" ....the only reason I didn't do the same thing as you....

Still looks to be a promising app though....

:D I thought about the same thing, too, so I chose to submit a Live Report, which is considered an "officer in a temporary location using radar," and cancels itself in an hour. The Camera and Regular Speed Traps, I believe, stay on the system longer.

I love this idea. Their website is great. After installing to my BJ2, I found that I couldn't configure Trapster to utilize the onboard GPS, despite having run the app to fix the GPS issue. Googlemaps works fine with the GPS, so who knows how to get Trapster to use it? Personally, I don't like digging around inside the Regitry manually, so I hope there's a software fix of some kind.

thanks

This is a pretty cool program, since I have to commute a long way to my colleges (at "highway" speeds). I got it working right away no probs. Still trying to get it to work with my Google Maps mobile. That would be awesome.

This little novel below is not for the faint of heart. I put it in chunks to try to make it eaier on ya. :(

Trapster worked for me for a few days...

(while Trapster was running) On the third day the phone would ring on the caller's end the normal amount of times and then would go to voice mail, but it would not ring on my--cellular--end. After realizing this, I simply tried powering on and off the phone, which worked the first time; the first and a half-time, if you will, Trapster froze as it was auto-loading (which led me to suspect Trapster and, I hadn't loaded anything else on the phone). Another power done. This time, the phone couldn't even find the ATT network. After checking Connections under Wireless Settings (or something like that?), I saw the phone was set at "Media Net," and not set at "On." I changed the setting to On, and it worked - for a while.

I reset again a while later, after I got a voice mail notification but the phone had not rang. I powered on/off and after Trapster loaded I checked the setting and it was back to Media Net. I disabled Trapser, restarted the phone, and it worked - the wireless setting was automatically changed to On. Thinking this was going to work, I restarted the phone again, attempting to get a clean restart, but it didn't work. No Trapster, setting was still at On; and the Battery Warning came up, saying it was going to shut down the phone; some anoying beeping also started which went sounded consistently, but randomly as I continued to trouble shoot, powering on/off...Meanwhile, I became skeptical about which setting the Phone should read: On, or Media Net, and of course, what the heck the battery warning came on for. I also noted that I didn't have a manual setting option other than On or Off.

At that point I thought I needed to know for sure if it was Trapster actually changing the settings and messing with the Battery Warning. I started the Trapster program without restarting the phone and after it loaded, I checked the settings - back to Media Net....but it worked this time!? I called myself a few times and it rang normally. A little confused at this point, I powered down to check consistency (hey, if it's not going to work I want to be at home, next to a land line, you know?). After this power down and restart, it worked normally; no battery warning either (which had had only come on that one time). But not totally convinced, I restarted it again after a few minutes. Sure enough - the phone couldn't find the network and I eventually got "Emergency Services Only" on the Home Screen. I restarted again and nothing, no network; settings were still at Media Net. I then removed the Trapster program using Remove Programs and the phone then almost immediately recognized the network, and I checked to find the settings were automatically changed back to On; the phone has been restarted a few times since then and has been working wonderfully (knock on wood) ever since...

I really liked the idea behind Trapster and I realize it's still in Beta, but I'm a little concerned about reloading the program on my phone. If I'm "lucky" and it still didn't work, I suppose I could just remove the program again. I'd just hate to let it mess up anything [else] on the phone. Nothing a hard reset wouldn't fix, perhaps...but sill. :D

EDIT! After reading this over, I was curious for some reason: after just looking under settings it's back to Media Net. But it's been working, so I take it that Media Net is normal, eh? Dang...and I thought I was on to something (what, I'm not sure, but something!). Maybe I will try reloading Trapster. . . . .

EDIT EDIT!! (I guess this is what happens when an English major tries to get Scientific!) Curious yet again (good thing I'm not a cat), because I expected to see "On" under the settings, I powered on/off, checked the settings: On. I then opened IE, let the home page load, then checked the settings again: Media Net. So, maybe I'm starting to learn something here, but I won't start getting cocky...I'm sure you guys are going to tell me the settings changing is normal or something; and that the Media Net, as opposed to On, simply eludes to the currect connection to the ATT network...
