Guest Nottach Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 I've got an unlimited data plan and I use ICS a lot. Am I going to get in trouble with AT&T? Will they notice the massive amounts of data I'm using? Not GBs but definitely MBs. Should I be worried?
Guest thelostsoul Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 If you have the PDA Unlimited Plan: Worry only if you are transferring in the GBs or really high MBs (maybe). If you have the MediaNet Unlimited Plan: Worry at around 200mb because your using the wrong plan AND your tethering.
Guest Nottach Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 I've definitely got the PDA unlimited, so I'm in the clear? As long as I don't deal in pirated stuffs while tethered? I only surf around the net and download family pics and movies while tethered, maybe a little streaming video like CNN.com. But I'm not downloading movies or music so I can't be using more than 200Mbs a session. Thanks for the info LostSoul.

I'd be careful cause if they catch you they'll drop your data plan and charge you at the per kilobyte rate for all the data you've downloaded which will result in a couple thousand dollar bill.
Guest Nottach Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 (edited) Well, what's the difference if the data is transfered while syncing e-mail via data-connect on my device versus data transfered while tethered? I get a lot of pictures sent to my e-mail, most are about 7-10Mbs each, since I'm a graphic designer. Hi-Def pics show up on my device via e-mail every fifteen minutes. Easily download 75Mbs a day straight to my phone. Not to mention I'm always surfing the net, posting stuff, Google maps and Live Search maps downloading stuff, PPTs and PDFs on the device also. I'm not too worried I guess. I was just wondering how much is too much. After all, isn't that the whole point of a WinMo "smartphone"? Thanks again LostSoul. Edited April 8, 2008 by Nottach

That last post wasn't me, but to answer your questions... It is against their rules/TOS, but is not likely to be a problem unless you are transferring in the GBs of data. From what I hear, once you hit 1GB, your account is flagged. AFAIK, there is no way they can tell whether you are tethering or not, and nobody seems to believe it is possible for them to tell. That said, it is always possible and is therefore a "use at your own risk" scenario, but I wouldn't expect to have any problems. If they do find out, there have been unverified reports of people getting backcharged per-kilobyte, but I would say a few hours on the phone with customer care would probably remove the majority of that bill, plus you could definitely argue you were not tethering as I doubt they would know.
Guest nycsmartphone Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 I am searching for a solution fo rmy problem, saw this post and is it possible that Internet Sharing is disabled on my ATT Samsung i617 VBlackjack II on purpose? I am trying to set up internet sharing on my Blackjack II. I found the Internet Sharing application in the \Windows Directory. When I select Internet sharing I get an alert: Can't find ':MSINTERNET_SHARING' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all the required libraries are available. How do I get this working? If I need to reinstall where do I download the software?

It seems AT&T, Samsung, and/or Microsoft does not include the Internet Sharing app on the Blackjack II. What I have on my phone is a LINK to the Internet Sharing app, a link to nowhere. I found some very easy to follow and simple instructions to get this working on the BlackJack II. I am one happy guy. Many thanks to keithelder.net and the Howard forums. See the link: AT&T Blackjack II Windows Mobile Phone Review AT&T provides instructions on setting up Internet Sharing for the BlackJack II so they may be helping you violate your TOS. http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-c...287&isSrch=Yes
