new to smartphones...major issues

1st off I'd like to say hello to all the forum members with i617's, and thanks in advance for any help I may recieve through here. Lemme list my issues

1. I've been getting an issue that I think is pretty common from reading the forums, but I want a bit of background details before I undertake any of the given solutions I have read about. Fairly often and randomly, the phone will lose the connection to the internet through any means. (CV, MediaNet, IE, etc.) Cingular tech support provided the "reset your phone" solution that is less than satisfactory. I've read of the "delete the AT&T IMS," "set to Internet connection" and a couple others, but I don't quite understand what those things actually do to my phone other than the literal text. Some slight explanation would be nice.

2. I get the impression that there is a heckuvalot of stuff that can be done to the phone pretty easily and alot of these things interest me. (I saw the SNES tutorial :( ) I'm moderately tech savy with computers, but completely inept with my phone. What would you all suggest to make my experience with this phone better.
