Intermittent Freezing

Does your Blackjack II freeze up every now and then? I'm not talking about freezing when running any particular program or feature within a program. I mean setting your phone down and coming back a while later to find it frozen.

The solution is cake: remove and replace the battery, but until I discover it frozen, I'm missing calls.

It seems that half of the days I don't have this issue. The other days it happens up to a couple of times. When I bought my wife her Blackjack II a couple of months after I got mine, I didn't expect the same behavior, but hers does the same.

Anybody else?

Do you have any 3rd party applications installed that are common to both phones?

If you have SmartToolkit installed on any of the two, that program will sure cause it to freeze up, best not to use that alpha/beta program....

Yes.

Com 4 GPS Hack from this site and Garmin XT Mobile.

I also have a Kingston 2Gig SD RAM chip in both.

So if no one else is experiencing this, perhaps it comes down to those three elements. I'm leaning toward the RAM chips being slightly incompatible since I haven't heard of a freezing issue with people here a Modaco due to installing the GPS software + hack.

Does this sound reasonable?

Are any of these apps installed to the SD card? (I assume Garmin will be). Try running both the phones without the SD cards for a day and see what happens. If you get no freezes then that points to either the SD card or something that is installed on the SD card.

I was thinking the same thing. I'll give it a shot.

Thanks

Okay, here are my preliminary observances to this freezing problem (since it seems this problem is rare among Blackjack II owners, this post is more for an archival history for others who might have this issue later):

* My wife and I both have Blackjack IIs manufactured 3 months apart in early 2008.

* Both of us experience intermittent freezing or nonresponsive keys that may or may not lead to a "Can't find MSCDIAL..." error or something similar.

Turns out that:

* The problem seems to occur far more often with the battery that came with my phone (I sometimes exchange our batteries)

* The problem seemingly related to this particular battery seems to only happen when the battery has a full, or mostly full, charge.

I'll continue to test this. If I can consistently reproduce this behavior, I'll call Samsung and request a new battery. I'll let the group know when I do.

UPDATE:

I still have the same battery for my phone, but I have kept my phone out of Silent mode. No freezups whatsoever in over a week now. I've been charging to full the whole way.

Maybe the error is caused when the phone gets a sound event when it's in Silent mode?

HAHAHA some of you are probably saying, "Get a new phone already JBONE!!!!"

i actually had the same freezing issue with mine too in the first week or two of owning it. i don't know if this fixed it, but i did a hard reset of the device and didn't re-install the GPS hack (GPS worked fine without it).

other than that, i had previously set up the phone to collect my emails by doing a send/receive automatically every 5 mins, but after i did the hard reset i started using an exchange server (mail2web). not sure how this could've affected things, but it's the only other thing I did differently.

haven't had any freeze ups for a few weeks now. not sure if this helps but thought I'd share :-)

UPDATE (probably the last):

Even since my last post in this thread, my phone has not locked up once. Not even ONCE! Of course I'm thankful for this, but at the same time I hate it when I don't know the cause of a problem.

Maybe my phone just needed to be broken in. Weird.
