Unable to access internet with 3G (and other problems)

I can connect with Wi-fi and make calls etc. I can even establish a 3G connection ( data logged as sent and recieved on the GPRS monitor) but whenever I try to use an app that has to connect the internet like IE it displays "Cannot Connect with current connection settings etc". The settings are correct and untouched since I had the phone (Vodafone). I'll try a hard reset but I'd like other options before I do this. Also I'm finding that the action of pressing the answer key on an incoming call will cancel the call occasionaly - not very confidence inspiring.
