Guest aspillmann Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Electric shocks !! Has anyone noticed that when you use your phone while it’s plugged to the mains you get electric shocks. Not that 12v is harmful but it’s not the best feeling… Any ideas or suggestions…
Guest HelloDave Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 You mean the phone itself? The charger gives you a shock if you touch the pins soon after unplugging it, but otherwise sounds a bit suspect to me. Might be time to get a replacement phone!
Guest mikey808 Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 I've never experienced this, or heard of anyone else who has.. Maybe you need to check out your charger and have your phone looked at. Sounds weird ! On the plus side some folk believe mild electric shocks are beneficial to general health and well being ;-) Hope you get it fixed ok.
Guest pjc Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Sounds pretty dodgy to me! If you have Orange Care you should be able to get a replacement SPV within 24hours. Try giving the Orange helpdesk a call.
Guest AsherUK Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 This seems quite strange as the SPV charger is only 5vDC and 1A which is not enough to "feel" a shock from. It is sometimes possible to feel a small shock if you hold the metal parts of the output connector and repeatedly turn this type of charger on and off (not advised) as the components inside the charger generate back-EMF when this is done, but I would find it strange for such a small charger to do this to any great effect. (and I would also find it strange for anyone to stand by a wall socket rapidly switching their charger on and off just to get an electric shock ! ). The only other possibilities I can think of are a faulty charger, faulty house wiring (but this is unlikely to have any effect in an un-earthed double insulated device), bad charger/phone design or static electricity. It's probably best to try another charger (ask Orange nicely and they should send you one) and see if that cures the problem.
Guest jaso2005 Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Yes i have had an electric shock off the charger too, seems like there is a fault there. As i brought my phone offline, does anybody know how much the new chargers are? Jas
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 More than a USB sync cable ;)
Guest mike-oh Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Most likely to be static earthing from you to your charger rather than the other way around. I had my hand on my plasma ball (one of those fascinating things with lightning in) and my other hand on my phone which was charging and OUCH! You can get static just by moving around in your clothes or walking on carpets so i wouldn't worry too much.
Guest benny Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Come on, admit it....you've been wearing nylon pants again, haven't you! B
Guest HelloDave Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 I'm a bit confused now - which part of the charger are you getting shocks from? The pins on the 3 pin plug or the plug that goes into the SPV?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Probably the three pin plug end. This fault was reported back in the early days the best suggestion was the capacitor discharging in the charger. This could be down to poor build quality. One suggestion was to take the charger back but I'm sure it would happen again as it's happened to me. Was the charger still plugged in to you SPV? as I only remember thhis happening to me when I unplugged from the wall but the other end was still connected to my phone. Hope this helps
Guest HelloDave Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 I know the 3 pin plug end gives you shocks, and they hurt! I looked a right plonker the first time it happened and I jumped out of my seat on the train... ;)
Guest AsherUK Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 LOL ;) ... I did something similar to that too, but I got a shock off the plug of a vacuum cleaner (obviously I wasn't on a train at the time though !!)
Guest MECX Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Free rubber gloves with every SPV--that would do the trick---nice bright yellow ones. ;)
Guest woody Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 any colour except orange   ;)
Guest MECX Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 any colour except orange   ;) heheheheheheheheh   :D
Guest fixit Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 OK - a few years ago I remember 'Technoturkey' in the Sunday Torygraph by Barry Fox. This section outlined the sordid history of either obviously doomed devices or well conceived, formative technologies (such as betamax) that lost out on their deserved market share owing to bad implementation by whoever had a stranglehold on their design/marketing/sales side. So it seems to be with the SPV. I like mine a lot, even more so now I can play Doom and Tetris on it, but my God, just look at the thing. The simple fact that this forum exists and has the traffic that it does is testimony to the scale of the c**k up that the designers of this phone made in trying to rush it out in time for Chrimbo 2002. Hundreds of software bugs, bad design of the handset itself, the obligatory MS security hole (thank God) - and now a charger that despite being a low voltage low amperage device still apparently has the capacity to deliver a noticeable shock to the end user. And this is happening in an Americanised 'compensation culture' in which people have attempted to sue 9 volt battery manufacturers when they've stopped their hearts by committing the frankly Darwinian act of applying the terminals to their own tongues. It's bonkers. Like a particularly bad restaurant, as a customer you can only stand back and marvel at the level of skill required to get it so wrong. Even Dilbert pales in comparison. To quote the despicable Richard Littlejohn, "You couldn't make it up." Anyway, I still like my phone. I've long since written it off as a hundred quid well spent on entertainment - sadly at the operators/designers expense. And as long as the earth is blessed with a population of the sort of happy, natural fiddlers with a penchant for early technology adoption and a genuine relish of performing free beta testing for large corporates, then this sort of thing will continue. And before anyone gets indignant, I count myself as one such person. I can't work out if I'm at the technological front line or a complete mug. Hmmm. Comments?
