Guest sfleuriet Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Skyfire Beta 1 Registrations Now Closed -- ??
Guest thelostsoul Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 It's too slow to use as your primary browser, but its cool to have the youtube access and be able to view desktop format pages. The biggest problem is it really is just a VNC like viewer for the web. It's just streaming a picture to you really....

Guest bfuller181 Posted May 13, 2008 Report Posted May 13, 2008 I don't get the hype about Skyfire. Sure, it's great to be able to render flash and watch video on the phone, but it's slow, it won't display in landscape mode, you can only browse in thumbnail view (regardless of what type of website you're looking at), and it's slow (yeah, I said it twice). IE mobile is awful, Opera Mini is ok, and Opera Mobile is $24 - is it worth it? Should I just wait for 9.5 at this point?
Guest moooseman Posted May 13, 2008 Report Posted May 13, 2008 it will probably be free to upgrade so u dont have to wait.you caget the thirty day trial and see if you think its worth it. oh and you can watch you tbe from operamobile.it just loads on the windows media player
Guest mosamjc Posted May 18, 2008 Report Posted May 18, 2008 For one thing, it's not that slow, really. Factor in a little variable overclocking (276 Max on my unit before sound breaks), it renders more quickly than the Opera 9.5 beta I have on my Kaiser. Moreover, unlike netfront or opera mobile, I can access ANY web content, such as my favorite online radio stations not accessible through standard streams as well or streaming videos from ANY website, not just the amateur nonsense on youtube. This thing even gives you quick full access to Google's standard ajax web services, such as docs (although limited right now to the 2000 character max limit in the beta which is soon to be resolved). If you can't see the advantage of being able to access the entire web 2.0 featuring any multimedia your desktop browser can deliver on your mobile phone, you probably shouldn't be here, or have a smartphone for that matter. Just my two cents. Oh, and the current version does display in landscape on both sp and ppc phones, so brush up on your facts everyone before you blow smoke out your ass (with the exception of Miguel, who is right on)
Guest thelostsoul Posted May 18, 2008 Report Posted May 18, 2008 Please, the flaming is unnecessary. My point was that it is not really a browser. It downloads an image from the internet of the website. I have a VNC server setup on my computer which allows me to view what is currently on my computer screen. The way Skyfire works is no different than that, except that with skyfire I am unable to access the entirety of my computer. I have used Opera Mini, Jb5, Opera Mobile, IE, IE6.1, Opera Mobile 9.5 (PDA), along with many other lesser known mobile browsers. The one I consistently choose to use for speed, reliability, and overall ease of use is Opera Mini 4.1. I often use Opera Mobile to download software, skyfire to watch southparkstudios.com, and IE for MediaNet, but Opera Mini for just about everything else. Skyfire has potential, but until 3G is widespread enough, download an image like that is just too slow over EDGE. Want to test my claim that it's a VNC server? Go run the ACID3 test, and when it finishes, click in the white space. It'll open a Windows box, where you can then click OK, but it seems to struggle a bit from how it renders further.

I really think Skyfire has alot of potential. I have only one complaint and that is the battery drains FASTTTTT. hope they will fix that in the beta 2.
Guest mosamjc Posted May 18, 2008 Report Posted May 18, 2008 I don't necessarily think it drains the battery any faster than any other 3G multimedia services (especially mobitv or xm mobile, which coupled with a moto s9 stereo headset rapes the phones battery life to less than an hour on full charge), in fact I get almost of straight video playback with the phone on a medium brightness setting. However, I feel the burn to as that is not great if you need your phone all day and I just dug out my 20 pin headphone adapter to see if the wired head set will yield any better power management.
