Guest gawdess97 Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 I am completely stumped and hope that maybe someone here can help me out. I have spent the last 3 days searching the internet for a solution to my quandary to no avail. I am sick of the preloaded ringtones popping up in the list of options when I set alarms or try to find a ringtone for a particular caller. I want to delete them altogether. Unfortunately, the files are in the windows folder and when I try to delete them, it tells me that I don't have permission to do that. I have unlocked the phone and thoroughly hacked it (reordering start menu, etc.), and downloaded and installed Total Commander but can't seem to figure out a way to delete the files using that. I have tried to delete the files using file explorer on the phone as well as Windows Mobile Device Center on my laptop running Vista, also unsuccessfully. Someone please help me, while I still have some hair left. :D Also, I have downloaded a replacement file (ms_mobile_oem.gif) that shows the letters that correspond with the numbers on a standard phone keypad, but when I try to replace it, I again get the error that I don't have permission to do that. Any suggestions? ---The Gawdess

First you have to unlock your phone (see other posts). Then I used Resco Explorer rather than the builtin explorer to do the deleting and replacing. What I did was create an empty stop.wav and start.wav, copy it to the phone into \My Documents, then replace the originals with Resco Explorer. Strange how everyone gets different results but that worked for me. Mine is the at&t i617.

Guest tobbbie Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 There are a few options for you: 1.) Try to remove the "Read only" attribute of the file(s). If these are files in RAM - you may succees deleting them afterwards. 2.) If the files are in ROM you will never be able to delete them - but you could "overwrite" them with copy of any other file you like (located in RAM then). In your case just copy a file of the same name (but with your content) there - and it will be used. good luck, tobbbie :-)
