FlexMail 4, an excellent replacement mail application for Pocket PC AND Smartphone, has been released! The eagerly awaited update is a massive rewrite / upgrade of an already very well respected and award winning application, that should have a place on the device of any real 'e-mail warrior'.

I've been using the application since Beta phase, and it's completely indespensable for me now... particularly on VGA devices or my REDFLY (although it works great on QVGA too!)

From the Flexmail product page...

FM4_MessageView.png
FlexMail 4 is a full-featured award-winning (2004/2005/2006/2007) Email application that works with your device's built-in Messaging client to provide the best Exchange and IMAP connectivity available on Windows Mobile! Use FlexMail to improve your ActiveSync or SMS messaging with our multiple signature support, multiple folder searches, and cross-account email copies and moves. Use FlexMail to connect with the best IMAP feature-set on Windows Mobile with easy to configure yet powerful folder settings. Set each folder to download differently, notify of new messages, and get email using PUSH use IMAP IDLE.

FlexMail 4 is a major upgrade from FlexMail 2007 and offers many huge changes including:
  • Better IMAP features support (server search to filter messages, server-side messages parsing, more message operations done over IDLE, single attachment download etc.)
  • Supports MMS on most devices
  • IMAP server folders redesign (more settings, easier to use)
  • Accounts and Application settings redesign
  • Single-page view redesign (tabs gone, new left panel with IDLE indication)
  • Original Email HTML reply/forward
  • New Notification settings (global-account-folder)
  • Internal changes (messages saved already parsed, better save/load performance on WM5 etc.)
  • Asian Language Encoding Plugin
  • Improved internals

With FlexMail's many options you can customize your email usage much more than the Windows Mobile device Messaging allows. Receive your email via ActiveSync and respond via your POP3/IMAP4 SMTP account. Get immediate per email or per folder notifications via IMAP IDLE! Have FlexMail only hold the last 5 days of your IMAP folders. Create local folders and server folders. Synchronize by age, size, and synchronizations status on a per folder basis allowing you to get only the last 5 day's worth of email in your Inbox but the last months in your Personal folder, for example.

    Top features include...
    • Hotkeys - While in the message list just press a key to reply, delete, flag, or any one of 10 commands quickly.
    • Push Email - Using IMAP IDLE, FlexMail gets immediate notifications of new messages
    • Updated User Interface - More usable interface on Windows Mobile 5 Windows Mobile devices
    • Searching - Search single or multiple folders for email within IMAP/POP3/SMS or ActiveSync accounts
    • Rules Engine - Full featured Rules Engine lets you move, reply, mark messages and more based on custom rules with an easy to use GUI
    • Fast - Uses the Windows internal database engine for performance and reliability
    • Meeting Requests - Accept and Reject Meeting Requests
    • Address Auto-Complete - Quick Selection of matching contacts
    • Flags - Reply/Forwarded and Flagged Messages now displayed and synched
    • Folder Synchronization - Under IMAP, each folder can have separate Download/Upload/Delete characteristics
    • Sent/Drafts - Assign IMAP Sent/Drafts Folders

    More Killer Features...

[*]Notifications - Per Account and per new message notifications [*]HTML Viewing - View HTML Email through POP3/IMAP with or without images [*]Pocket Informant - (Pocket PC only) Integrated with Pocket Informant for editing contacts and creating tasks/appts from an email [*]Views - 3 pane view, 2 pane view, 1 page view [*]Preview Window - Display a Preview window to read your email more quickly [*]Signatures - Per Account Signatures [*]SOCKS - Full proxy support [*]Full SSL Support - SSL POP3/IMAP with standard and custom ports [*]Full Authentication SMTP - With SSL, CRAM-MD5, Authentication, and POP3 check before send plus separate authentication for Send and Receive [*]ActiveSync - Supports ActiveSync or Exchange ActiveSync [*]Account Test - Test your SMTP Account Settings [*]Immediate Send - Send emails immediately [*]Character Sets - Extensive character set support [*]Designed for Windows Mobile - Certified for Windows Mobile 5.0/6 (Smartphone and Pocket PC) and Pocket PC 2003 with full support for Square Screens, VGA and QVGA screens

Phew! As if ALL THAT wasn't enough, FlexMail 4 includes AppToDate support, and continues to be free for MoDaCo Plus members. Awesome :D

FlexMail costs $29.95, and a free trial is available from the FlexMail product page at WebIS. :(

Updated a couple of days back ... an improvement on the previous version. Will see how I get on with it.

Strangely noticed it doesnt have threaded SMS support ... yet when I reply to an SMS, it opens the threaded sms application from Flexmail!

I'd love to see some shots of Flexmail 4.0 on the REDFLY.

Also, does Flexmail 4.0 seem stable? Older versions were hobbled by bugs and instability... As much as I wanted to like it, it was impossible. Is it solid now?

Yes, it seems very stable... sounds like you're a good candidate for trying the demo :D

I'll grab some REDFLY screenies when I get a chance...

Hi Paul / guys

After finding this on the news, I thought I would download the trial and see how it faired against the "standard" mail app for the TYTN II WM6

Before I start, just to point out I have a 4GB Micro Card, and tons of memory on the device itself. I use it for Active Sync mail and SMS Messages. Hardly any apps installed, got Tom tom 6, a few little games, and thats about it.

Now, install was fine. As Paul points out, alot of features, so I will be reading the PDF later in much more detail.

Some things I have noticed straight away:

1) Its not syncing with Active Sync! I have 4 accounts (Active Sync, Windows Mail, POP3 account and the SMS messages account). The Active Sync, although setup, appears in the standard "Mail" client, but not FlexMail. will look into this more.

2) When getting SMS messages, FlexMail shows I have 2049 in the inbox and over 1,700 sent. But the annoyance is it takes over 1 min for me to see the SMS in FlexMail. If I use the standard mail app, it appears in seconds.

3) Nice layout, just sluggish at times

As it stands, as much as i would really, really like it, and use email alot, I am not sure I can justify the cost for something that I may or may not use. Not knocking it, as I see a host of features that make it a killer mail application.

If anyone knows of a way to speed things up (currently installed on the card), please let me know

Thanks, Simon :D

1) This works for me!

2) :D

Speed wise, I think I have it installed on the card too, but then I don't have the insane amount of SMS you have :(

It does use the Windows internal storage database tho, so that's on the device itself.

Paul,

Well I may try on the device itself. To be honest, I did not believe the SMS messages was that high. And remember, the "Built in" SMS app for WM6 works very, very fast, less than 1 second to view a message !

Switching between views for me are dead slow too.

Also mine receives my email from my hosted exchange via activesync. But when I do "send and recieve", there is NOTHING in the box ... no progress, nowt.

I turned off the slidey animation thing btw... (for the redflys benefit)

I get exactly the same problem here too!! Nothing appears!! Yet, if I go to the Email built in app and do a send receive, it kicks active sync into play and receive emials !

Glad it is not just me !

All

Just to let you all know, I installed the Flexmail app on the device itself, and the SMS messages are still slow to load. In fact, takes under 1 min to load it !

Shame..... not sure if its a bug or what.... 1,800 messages now !

Well after an install to the device, the problem persists, and I refuse to remove my sms messages because the pocket outlook / sms built in program works fine.

There is definetely an issue with activesync via Exchange and Flexmail as it just refuses to show up, but does so in pocket outlook.

Sadly, although it looks good, it just isnt quite there yet!

Same here ... removed flexmail this weekend, it's powerful, but too fiddly and slow.
