If you are lucky enough to have a HTC Touch Diamond or a HTC X7510 (the new advantage), then chances are you've already been lucky enough to play with the new-generation Opera browser, which finally brings truly usable desktop-style browsing to Windows Mobile.

If you are using another handset though, you'll be pleased to learn that the non device specific version of Opera Mobile 9.5 enter public Beta on July 15th!

Featuring some special featuers over and above what is included in the OEM versions (Google Gears, Opera Widgets and I wouldn't be surprised to see Opera Link in there too), the application will be available for all Windows Mobile Professional (Pocket PC) devices. Sadly, unlike previous versions, there is as yet NO mention of a Standard (Smartphone) version!

We'll be bringing you the download link as soon as it is available... so watch this space! :D You can also read more over on the Opera Mobile blog, a snippet from which follows!

We have some exciting news to share today. It's almost time to release Opera Mobile 9.5 for Windows Mobile to the world. We thank you for your patience and support as we make what we (and many others) believe is the best browser for mobile phones. A release testing phase is underway now and the target date for the first beta is July 15th. You will be able to download it from opera.com just like you would any other versions of Opera.

Opera Mobile 9.5 will be based on the same browser engine as Opera 9.5 for desktop, and this is the reason why it has taken some time to get it ready. A new version of the browser engine will ensure that you can surf the Web with a browser supporting the latest and greatest in Web standards.

Some versions of Opera Mobile 9.5 are already shipping on great phones like the HTC Touch Diamond, and some of you have asked why we wouldn't be able to release it publically yet. As you probably know, releasing a version that works on a large variety of phones is more complex than making it work on one specific phone. You should also expect a few differences between the versions that are pre-installed on phones and the public version of Opera Mobile 9.5.

We'll have more details about the product in the near future. Thanks again, and we hope you're ready for some beta testing with us.

Hello Paul,

I wanted to know how you found out that Opera Mobile 9.5 will not be released for the Smartphone (wm6 standard)? I would be so dissappointed if they left out non touchscreen users but I dont see anything on the web that says they are leaving this out. I know the opera blog is going completely nuts because they didn't mention a symbian version in the announcement. I just wanted to know how you know for sure that the smartphone is not being supported? Thanks so much and for what it's worth, I hope your wrong...Take care.

Paul, how do you think Opera will fare with device makers when the new PIE comes out?

Good question, '6on6' is something of an unknown quantity at the moment however! Only time will tell... I think all manufacturers would ideally lower their costs by not having to licence a 3rd party browser, and using the one that comes with the OS>..

Well, it's only taken 6 years, but finally WM has a browser worth using. Well done (finally) Opera, where do I send the cheque?
