Guest mjt2810 Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Really annoying, was in Italy yesterday and wanted to synch my emails but couldn't, the connection would always fail (GPRS and 3G) but, the calls were working absolutely fine, any ideas???? Thanks, M.
Guest dearsina Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Have a look at your connection settings, and compare them to the "official" settings for your network in the UK. Also, can you browse the web? It could be a problem with your mail server instead of the connection.

Very odd as the settings are the same as for my old touch dual. Shouldn't be a problem, but is ...... ???????

Thanks, M. There are a few things to check 1) Make sure you are connecting to an Italian service that has a data roaming agreement with your UK operator. 2) Make sure in ActiveSync/Menu/Schedule that 'Use above settings while Roaming' is checked. You should still get a data connection even if not checked, but you never know! 3) Find out if the Italian operator was having technical problems. I've found in Italy and Slovenia that sometimes the data component is just not present for a few hours at a time.

Don't use ActiveSync for email synchronisation, use a product from iAnywhere called onebridge 3. It's happened on 3 occassions now, all different days ... would be too much of a co-incidence me thinks! There must be something, or some setting somewhere that isn't picking up a data roaming change .... M.

It may be that Voda IT don't allow the connection. Does you Mobile Web use the same connection?

Irrespective of onebridge, the internet is not accessible either which leads me to believe there is a more fundamental issue of general data access whilst roaming which I would assume there must be a setting for somewhere.

No- as long as you are using a recognised roaming partner, the APN set up in Connections ought to work without any problem. It may be worth looking in Connections to see which APN is setup for your web access, or in Connections/Advanced and see what settings are listed under Select Networks. You may have a choice of Mobile Web, or WAP connections, but would need to check with Voda as to which is the correct one to use. I've used my various XDA's in France, Germany, Austria, Italy (many times!) and Slovenia (Many times also!) without having to make any adjustments to the settings. Oh- & just because you are with Voda in UK, doesn't necessarily mean Voda Italy are the preferred roaming partner (they may be- I don't know)- last year in France, though I'm with Orange, I couldn't connect to Orange France at all for data, I had to use the France Telecom connection.
Guest Neil5459 Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 I know this is an old thread, and may not now be relevant to the OP, but I myself have just returned from 2 weeks in Italy, and guess what? No data service via Vodafone IT :D I'm with Orange UK who have roaming agreements with TIM, I-Wind and Voda IT. TIM and Wind connected fine, but nothing from Voda at all- just got the 'Please check your settings' message. I can only assume that the Voda IT data system is down, and has been since the original post?
