Guest Thurstan Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Anyone installed said app? I must have downloaded it from somewhere before Christmas, and just found it in an unzipped folder. I'm wondering what it does (is it for online books) and whether to install it.
Guest pupton Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 http://www.mobiledynamo.com/products.htm There you go...
Guest Treadsoftly Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Is that a trial or a full version you downloaded?
Guest Thurstan Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 I'm not sure! I can't for the life of me remember how I came to download it. I've installed and it works - it's basically a program that lets you read stuff at up to 500 words a minute. It flashes the words across the top of the screen. Apparently you can read anything you want in this way. I'm just downloading the library utility from their website (this is supposed to let you transfer texts into the required format) and I'll let you all know more tomorrow.
Guest Thurstan Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Oh just followed this link from the main site: http://www.microsoftmobilitypress.com/site...5&SiteArea=A000
Guest Syvwlch Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 I have installed both the app (trial version, got it from PDAGold) on the phone, and the Library utility on the PC The app works great, i really can read 400+ words per minute, but I can't seem to get the utility to work. It says that it can't find the Speed Reader Plus library on the device. Basically means I'm stuck with the three little sample texts. Which I (of course) read in a few minutes... I've asked MobileDynamo support for help... we'll see where THAT goes. Perhaps this is just the restriction on the trial version? Does anyone have it running?
Guest Thurstan Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Same here - sorry I've only just seen your PM, Syvwlch. The Library Utility won't copy texts across. But I've found a way you can copy things which can be read by the program. Here's what to do: 1. Copy the you want to be able to read. 2. Create a .txt file in Notepad on PC 3. Save the .txt file BUT the name of the file must end with ~0 (eg. Test~0.txt) 4. Using ActiveSync, copy this file into the folder called 'Library' in the directory into which you installed the app. (eg. Mine is in Storage CardProgramsSpeed Reader Plus SP) 5. Open the app, go to Menu -> Open Library.. the .txt file should be there! Mine required a reboot before it would pick it up the first time. So you should now be able to 'speed read' documents created in the NotBad notepad available elsewhere on the forum.
Guest Syvwlch Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Thanks, Thurstan! Just tried it, and it does open the file... however I get bad results with text files with CRs (show up as blocks and tie words together, making them flash by in a clump before you read them. Also took a look at the original files provided, they have some weird characters in there, but no CRs. I'll see if I can't cook up some kinda Word Macro to convert the file to a readable format. thanks for the pointer, in any case!
Guest Syvwlch Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Ok, it's actually fairly easy. Word will obligingly find&replace the control characters from the original and add the weird ones if you copy&paste them from one of the original files. There are three f&r operations to be done : 1. replacing ". " by the proper end-of-sentence mark for Speed Reader 2. replacing ".^p^p" with the proper end-of-paragraph mark 3. replacing "^p" by a space The order is important. This would be slightly different depending on how the original file is formatted, I think, but this should work for Guttenberg Project plain vanilla eTexts, in any case. I'll try with a few different ones, and if it's the same, I'll make a Macro to automate the process. Simple, really. Reading The Invisible Man from HG Wells, now... Thanks again!
Guest Thurstan Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Good man, let me know when you've created a macro - I'm not sure how to use f&r on Word!
Guest Syvwlch Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Will do. In a pinch, the important bit is removing all paragraph marks from the text. The special Speed Reader marks are really there for the slightly longer pauses that follow punctuation. You can read without them, especially if the speed is set a tad low. To do that, in Word, you go to the Edit menu, choose Replace, and in the Find: line, type ^p and in the Replace with : line, type a single space. Then click replace all. That should be good enough for gv't work until i make the macro.
Guest Will Posted February 1, 2003 Report Posted February 1, 2003 hey they do a ppc backlight torch utility.. might be worth pressuring them into doing an spv version (sorry paul, the days of the torch are numbered!) Will
