Guest dshap Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 Hi, I am traveling in Australia for 4 months and am trying to setup my Blackjack II to use the 3G data network over here. I can use my AT&T SIM in "roaming" mode but it costs a fortune. I got the unlock code from AT&T and unlocked the phone. I am using an Optus SIM card and my provider has enabled GPRS so that I should be able to have unlimited data access (part of my plan). They gave me some GPRS information (access point, username, password) but I don't know how to put it into my phone and enable it so that I can get online. I tried adding a new connection and entered the provided information but everytime I try to launch IE I still get "Remote party ended connection." Could anyone please explain the steps I need to take to get this up and running? I would appreciate it very much.
Guest Confucious Posted July 27, 2008 Report Posted July 27, 2008 Are you in the US? And if I am right you have entered the Australian GPRS settings in your phone but when you try to connect in the US but with your Optus SIM it won't connect? If so, it sounds like roaming has not been enabled on your Optus SIM. It should work in Australia.
Guest dshap Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 (edited) Are you in the US? If so, it sounds like roaming has not been enabled on your Optus SIM. It should work in Australia. I apologize for not being more clear. I am in Australia right now. I bought the phone in the US, unlocked it, and brought it with me to Australia (they don't sell BlackJack II's in Australia, I believe). I'm going through a provider called Talk Down Under (www.talkdownunder.com) which is for study-abroad students and they gave me an Optus SIM card. They mostly work with voice plans so they don't know much about configuring phones for their single data plan ($59/month for unlimited data) which most people use Blackberries for. A BlackJack II should be able to get online in Australia, right? As long as GPRS is enabled for the SIM that I have... Can anyone give me specific instructions on how to get it working? I'm sorry but I'm not very familiar with this stuff and would really like to start using my data plan. Thanks so much for any help. EDIT: Here is exactly what I did: I went in to GPRS connections and found "MEdia Net" which actually used to come up under "Phone" in my Wireless Manager when I was in the US (MEdiaNet is the data plan I have from AT&T - it got godfathered in after they changed their plans and I don't think they offer it anymore - long story). I also found "AT&T IMS" in GPRS Connections. I found "AT&T WAP" in proxy connections. I deleted both existing GPRS connections and the single existing proxy connection. Next, I added a new connection called "Australia" and was told by my [seemingly incompetent] provider to simply enter the following information: Access point name: internet Username: blank Password: blank I rebooted my phone. Now I see "Australia" under "Phone" in the Wireless Manager. Now when I launch IE it says "Your Internet connection is not configured properly. Please verify your settings in Connections." Before I deleted those pre-existing connections it said something like "Remote party ended connection" which leads me to believe I'm on the right track. This is so frustrating because I'm in Sydney and my phone tells me there is full-strength 3G wherever I go. This isn't hopeless...right? They don't sell BlackJack II's in Australia but I should still be able to get this up and running if it's unlocked...right? Any further help would be greatly appreciated. EDIT #2: It works! I just found out that it is IE's settings that still needed to be changed, not my phone's. What I've learned from this is that if you want to get a new GPRS connection running - DELETE THE OLD ONES. This is a good tip for all blackjack II users here. If you want to go abroad and use your BJ2 on the data networks, you'll need to delete AT&T's connection settings. Of course I wrote down the settings so that I can re-input them when I get back :D Thanks. Edited July 28, 2008 by dshap
Guest Confucious Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Glad you got it sorted :D Hope you've set your DNS 202.139.83.3, 192.65.91.129 for Optus.
