Advice re: domain name registration

Hi All,

I want to register a domain name but have been burnt in the past by supposedly decent registration companies that registered the domain name under their name and when I wanted to transfer the name, they refused.

So I basically want a decent company that is officially an accredited registrar that can host my domain. I am willing to pay more of course (i've learnt my lesson, you pay for what you get!).

Thanks.

99% of domain registration companies are straight.

I use 123reg as I find their control panel easy to use - and have been able to transfer in and out at will.

GoDaddy is meant to be very good.

I use UKReg.

However if Im setting someone up with a domain and webspace, then I use Servage ... decent webspace and a domain for free. If you want servage, I can give you a referrer code so both you and I get 25Gig more space.

I use Godaddy and Virtualnames - both are good & no issue at all.

I tend to use Layershift for most of my domains. Got caught out before by using the dreaded domainbuster (part of Fast24) who went bust....

I also used Speedhosting for a recent domain. They are very cheap and have a great control panel but can't speak for the company. My domain has been hosted for over 6 months now with no noticable downtime.

For the past 9 1/2 years my domain has been with idealhosting.co.uk - every 2 years they forget to renew it for me but do wen I remind them and had no problem getting my MX record updated a couple of years ago.

I think I actually paid them for the first year but never paid anything for the past few years. No downtime except when they forget to renew....

I've been with Godaddy for a few years for domain reg and they're been great. If you want some advice, always try and keep your email, domain name and hosting seperate incase things go wrong. I have hosted Gmail for my email, Godaddy for my domain name and Hostingpuppy for my hosting. When Hostingpuppy's DNS servers went down recently, I was able to revert back to Godaddy's DNS servers, get my email back up and point my domain directly to my Hostingpuppy server (which was still up). If I'd had everything with Hostingpuppy, I'd have been screwed :D

Godaddy also give you free (ad-supported) hosting, email and allow private registrations.

I use mydomain.com and it's great, and SO cheap! Use the coupon 'bargaincat.com' too for a discount :D
