Auto Connection to Vodafone

hi all,

Does anyone know how I change settings to not allow my phone to connect straight to the vodafone internet when checking for updates etc? It sometimes sneaks in there when I don't realise, costing me money!

Only way I've thought of doing it is to turn on wifi first then launching IE or Opera.

Sorry I know I'm probably missing something obvious.
