Guest eyup Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Hey guys, Could someone confirm that if I buy this phone on an unlimited data plan (UK network) will I be able to hook it up to a laptop and use the unlimited data via the laptop? Ideally I need to be able to use remote desktop connection on the laptop using the inclusive data on the mobile contract. Is this possible? Unfortunately I way behind the game in what you can do with these connections now :-s Thanks

I can appreciate the restrictions for "unlimited" but is it actually technically possible with the i900 or would the network be able to tell and therefore charge me? I think I can get away using the remote connection within the fair usage limits on the data plans it just a case of working out whether they would differentiate between the two. In my mind it does not really constitute mobile data. Thanks Edited August 26, 2008 by eyup

You are perfectly free to use your phone as a modem - it's no different to buying a 3G dongle and putting it on your laptop. I'll eat my phone if they pull you up on it. As the previous poster mentions though, just be sure that you don't go over the FUP on your unlimited data.

Thanks Windows Mobile has an internet sharing app letting you do what you require, just set up an ActiveSync session and select Internet Sharing from Connection Menu (I assume its standard). Just beware on the limited access you get from your provide i.e. Orange 250MB/mth or Voda 15Mb/day
Guest lastnikita Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 they can differentiate using browser's useragent. your laptop will have a "desktop" useragent, while your phone has a mobile useragent. fortunately you can change firefox useragent with an extension :D Another problem is filtering, most providers (well, at least all in france) limit the connection: ports are filtered (here in france it is restricted to ports 80 and 443), and a proxy filters what goes through it. So the result is you can only surf on sites. You can bypass those protections using a VPN solution.
Guest eyup Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 Thanks for all the replies. Hopefully I can get it doing what I want and hopefully the remote desktop/VPN ports wont be closed. Now to negotiate a data package with orange!
