Hi, thought i'd post what i use for on the road charging.

and to show it's really charging...

btw can't sync with this cable i've only tapped the power source so it'll work with any usb styled chargers..

no pics but it's simple to make actually just need to get your hands on a spare charger (mine's an i780) snip the wire and you'll see 2 wires red n black. get a normal usb wire snip that too. solder to the usb's wire that leads to the left most tab on the usb plug for black and right most tab for red.

ti's abit small but you can see the black n red circle...... :D

the omnia's plug is moulded so need to slice it to open it's guts. no guts to do it.....

will see if i can get a spare usb link cable and make a 2 in one. then again might be just to lazy but if anyone needs help just tell me and i'll see how i can assist.

What about the pin outs at the samsung connector?

It will be great to know the USB communication pins as well as the TV OUT and stereo pin outs..

I thought the omnia would charge via the usb when connected to a computer ... i.e. trickle charge. But not a normal charge, like from an adaptor. I guess you have conned the omnia into thinking it's connected to a PC.

looking at the different plugs i've got (actually the same plugs but different usages) charging power is supplied via the 4 pins or the 2pins at both ends. USB data wire has got an extra pin on the left side (same view as the std usb plug in my previous post) which means left 3 pins and right 2 pins. hands free has got all the pins to the right side 9 pins total. so i presume ground is the last 2 pins on the right and 5V+ is left most 2 pins.

therefore all you need is to prevent the 3rd pin (count from outer left) from connecting and the the cable should be able to charge from any 5V 0.5A+ source.....

Did you have any luck with that?

I tried blocking the middle two (data) USB connections and that did not work, (i.e. does not register a connection at all) So I am guessing that the third pin has some special internal connections in addition to the USB data pins. I would guess that this is how they get data+ and data- through one additional pin.

nah, didn't work.... i got the pins wrong. if u can compare the data cable and the charging cable, you'll notice that the left side with the extra pins are all offset towards the center so they are different pins. basically the pins on the data cable start only after the ones on the charge cable ends...

ex 1 = pin present

. = pin not present

This does explain why the usb connector only charges in the right conditions and is ROM dependent.

I am really curious as to why they do this. Why change things around when USB charging is so easy to do and so convenient?

I usually charge my phone via a powered hub as I have spares lying around at my office and my home. My charger has a transformer attached so it is more bulky than my tiny USB hubs.

Another place where USB charging is nice is on Airplanes.

yeah, i understand where you're coming from. in fact, this is my first ppc that uses proprietary plugs, all my other PPCs use mini usb jack which are so convenient and many 3rd party equipment support. But then again it's Samsung's way to "direct" you to buy their accessories........ <_

just bought this on ebay (charges my additional batteries too you see)

but it doesn't charge the phone through the usb port. is this because of the reasons explained above? that being the case this person is falsely selling this item as it isn't an i900 compatible charger! as you can see it didn't cost much so not to bummed about it but it's just annoying.

advice appreciated.
