Guest honeymonster Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Hi all, Apologies if i'm being a dumbass but I'm not used to this kind of phone! Loving my new Omnia, but one thing I've noticed is that the backlight dims after 10 seconds as I've set it to, but the screen stays on so that it's totally viewable. Is this normal and will it kill my battery life or should the entire screen go black? If I press the power button once it turns off the screen but I don't want to keep doing this. I tried settings the device to power off after 1 min but this seems to turn the whole device off. Help appreciated. Thanks Tom
Guest nolimit966 Posted September 13, 2008 Report Posted September 13, 2008 i have the exact same problem......... any luck???

As far as im aware pressing the power button once puts the device to sleep. You can test this bye pressing it then phoning yourself, notice it will not ring or atleast didn't when i tested. It does seem that just diming the backlight after 10 secs would affect battery performance and i wish there was a way round it but i dont know of one. Setting the device to turn off after 1min does not actually turn it off, while in this mode if you get a txt or phone call it will ring/vibrate etc. To be fair the battery life on this phone is pretty descent anyway so im happy ;)

Guest mediavue Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 cheers for the reply! Its rediculous that the phone can even boast about it doest everything when it cant even switch its own backlight off!!!!!! its a joke mines going on ebay on monday and im getting my n95 back!! When you press the top power button it puts it into standby (where you CAN recieve calls / Texts). Pressing and holding the power button turns the device off (where you will get nothing). Go to Settings / Power / and Batter Power Tab. There you should have it set to "Turn off Device" - if Device not used for 1 minute. Then "turn off backlight if device not used for 30 seconds." - this puts it into the same state as pressing the power button on the top briefly - ie = Standby.
Guest lastnikita Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 (edited) lol, no  The "turn off device" option will put it to sleep, the same as if you just hit the power button. That's what you guys want. The "turn off backlight", will only turn off backlight, which sounds logical ;) That's just to preserve battery if you want it to stay on (wifi/music playing/etc.) You can completely shut it down by holding the power button for few seconds. I have got this checked but it doesnt turn off the backlight ever, its on constantly!
Guest warnold007 Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 That's weird... something must be wrong with your unit. I have mine set to turn off backlight after 10 seconds and to turn off device after 1 minute if not used. So it turns off the light (screen still active) after 10 seconds if not used, and then completely turns the screen off (but device is still on of course!) after 1 minute. When I get an SMS or a call, it turns on the screen and the backlight. After the alert, if I don't press anything, it turns off the backlight after 10 seconds and the screen after 1 minute. I think if you're playing an mp3, it does not completely turn off the screen unless you press (not hold!) the power button at the top. Did you try to soft reset?
Guest nolimit966 Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 yer ive done a soft and hard reset ;) :(
Guest lastnikita Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 general observation: if you get a bad behavior right after a hard reset, which you didn't get before with the same rom, then your problem is hardware. if you always got it with that rom, try flashing another one first. if same result, once again it's hardware.
Guest ejoya Posted May 24, 2009 Report Posted May 24, 2009 @threadstarter you're not alone. It seems that a lot of samsung omnia devices are affected by this problem, the backlight only dims when it should turn off. My old samsung i780 also had this problem and it was really painful to stay connected without backlight turn off. The only partial solution i know is to set your turn off device to around 5 minutes and use s2u2 to override the turn of device when touch key is lock to around 10 secs. this will hold your connection for 5 minutes, if you want to turn off the backlight without turning the device into sleep mode then use a manual backlight shortcut. the ultimate fix is to have it replaced. <_<
