XP doesnt detect Omnia

I haven't got very far in the flashing process as my XP cant see the phone. I have installed the Samsung driver (it says successful) but no phone when I connect the USB and expand explorer.

Does the phone need to be in a certain mode (a la Blackberry)?

Correction - my PC DOES recognise my phone BUT the reset pin remains greyed out.
