WM61 upgrade: "S/W version is wrong. Please check your device" _- SOLVED

SOLVED. Samsung Tier 3 told me to disable all antivirus software on my system, so I closed ClamAV and disabled Norton, and the software worked just fine. He said several times that McAfee was especially notorious for screening executables while they were running and such. As soon as I disabled those and started up the software again, it prompted me for the two 4-digit codes, and away it went. Worked like a charm.

Preliminary review of the whole ordeal is at http://blackjack2.info/ if anyone wants to check it out.

I'm on hold right now getting through to Samsung Tier 3 support, but I'm curious whether anyone else has had this error message when following the upgrade instructions.

When I get to Step Four, the Samsung ROM update software never prompts me for the two 4-digit codes, and when I reconnect my phone via USB, it gets to the second screen asking me to confirm that I've completed the steps above, and then gives me an error dialog saying "S/W version is wrong. Please check your device." and won't let me continue beyond that.

I tried a factory reset of the phone, downloaded another copy of the WM61 .zip (for XP) and tried again, and still no love.

Dialing *#1234# on the phone identifies it as an i617UCGK2 which I can't find any references to online. (searching for "UCGK2" on Google lists my unanswered post on the AT&T forums as the first match).

Anyone have any ideas? I've been on hold getting through to Tier 3 support for about 20 minutes now.

I too have this problem. Have not had luck with Samsung tech support.

I am having the same problem. Any ideas anyone?

I'm no expert but the screen that prompts for the password does pop up in a seperate window, so 1. check to insure it didnt pop up in the background, 2. make sure all antivirus programs are disabled as this may be preventing it from popping up and anything else is beyond my knowledge.

What version of windows are you using? I tried using the XP updater on a friends media center XP computer and got the same thing.

Afterwards I came back and used the Vista version on my Vista business x64 edition (just compatibility settings to XP when installing the modem drivers) and didn't have any problem at all updating.

Thank you for your answers, I am using Media XP, the drivers installed successfully, but the password prompt does not show up, I will check if it pops up somewhere in the background. :D

I think we have found our culprit.

Try it on a regular XP computer or a vista computer.

Disable all antirvirus software. tier 3 support also said to check the windows firewall software that maybe that was the problem. He said without the two 4-digit codes, the Samsung software doesn't work right.

I posted some followup notes at http://www.blackjack2.info/

I was having the same issues.

I was running the installer off of a networked drive. the first couple of times it was just a UNC path, then I tried mapping a drive letter to the resource but still was not getting the prompt for codes. When I copied the file to a local drive it prompted me right away for the codes so make sure you are installing the software from a local drive.

I use BitDefender Internet Security 2009... In my case, I had to drop both the Anti Virus and Firewall to get the WM6.1 Update to work. Hope this help any of you who might still be getting this error even after dropping your Anti Virus.

I discovered my solution for this problem was to run the BlackJack_WM6_1MR_Upgrade_For_XP.exe executable from a local drive.

When I tried running it from our fileserver, the authentication box (for the pair of four digit numbers) never showed up, and the application appeared to start on next screen. Any attempts to install the update were met with the "S/W version is wrong" message.

on second thought,

if i dont need to open it from a local drive(not saying i know if i have to or not)

but if i dont, what programs besides mcafee should i disable?
