Guest awarner (MVP) Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Welcome to the site :D There are no free map applications if you are refering to navigation, they all cost money. PS no need to shout in your topic title :D

PS no need to shout in your topic title :D Actually there is. Its called gpsVP, its a program that runs on free garmin map files. You can choose to download just your area map or any area of the world. It shows your location, speed, heading, sunset/rise info, altitude, odometer, battery, connection strength, the road your on, the roads around you, and you can set waypoints to different places. http://gpsvp.com/
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Interesting, I've not seen that app before. May look into it further and give it a try.
Guest PPCInformer Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Terracrosser lets you download Google maps on to your phone http://www.1800pocketpc.com/2008/09/04/ter...your-phone.html Requirement : GPS Module on the device ( internal / external )

The Microsoft.Net Compact Framework version required is not compatible with the BJ 2. Or at least that was my experience with Terracrosser. Please let me know if I am wrong.

Both programs are compatible with the BJII. I downloaded the latest version of Terracrosser (2.0) and .NET and installed both on my BJII. Terracrosser is working perfectly on my BJ. It took a bit to figure out how to properly download the maps but once you get the hang of the Mapper program it is pretty easy to use. I drove home for lunch and once the GPS got a lock it was able to follow my position on the maps I created/downloaded. Very cool program since you can download Google or Yahoo maps on your PC and then upload them to you BJ, which is great for those of us that do not have a data plan!! ;) I don't feel like such a newb anymore!! Hooray! -R Edited October 8, 2008 by Roujinz
Guest muna580 Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 Is it possible to use the Mapper (Terracrosser ) module to download the maps then use thsoe maps with gpsVP? I installed both gpsVP and Terracrosser, but i can't figure out how to use gpsVP. Where do I install the maps in order for gpsVP to notice them? Also, in gpsVP, what settings do I change so it doesn't try to connect to the internet and start downloading stuff so my service provider can charge me like craazy? Also, do I have to set the port to COM4 on the gpsVP?
Guest jemodaco Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 Is it possible to use the Mapper (Terracrosser ) module to download the maps then use thsoe maps with gpsVP? No it is not possible. See the post called "Mapper Program to Download Maps for gpsVP" on gpsVP discussion group: http://groups.google.com/group/gpsvp/brows...15ffc4e9be9ee1e Also, in gpsVP, what settings do I change so it doesn't try to connect to the internet and start downloading stuff so my service provider can charge me like craazy? Also, do I have to set the port to COM4 on the gpsVP? Simply disable "Allow internet connection" in the setup menu.

Guest Addd45 Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 am i aloud to use the word illegal ? lol
Guest Athenon Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 This doesn't require the phone to be connected to the internet does it? I've been wanting a GPS program ever since I cancelled my internet package...and I'm currently too lazy to go legally obtain Garmin again. So, is this a free and legal solution?
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted November 28, 2008 Report Posted November 28, 2008 Take a look at the third and fith post, there are two solutions you can try.
Guest Digame Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 I just downloaded Google Maps to my PC then sync-ed it over to the BJ II and it started working immediately with the maps already there. I don't know if this was available when the thread started. There is a link from Google Maps page to "sideload" it onto your BJ: http://www.google.com/mobile/default/maps.html Works good, even shows traffic conditions. I have to stay off it though, it drains the battery.

If it does require data usage and you don't have a data plan you are gonna get charged hella lot for syncing the maps from Google. I think that is why they state "This service is free from Google; carrier charges may apply." I could be wrong since I havent personally tried it. B) If you want an offline GPS program I suggest using Terracrosser. (www.terracrosser.com) The latest release of Terracrosser (v2.1.1) is now compatible with the BJ2. It allows for downloading custom maps from Google Maps or Yahoo Maps to your PC and then syncing them to your BJ via USB cable. You can than use your BJ2's GPS to acquire a satellite fix and display your location on the maps you downloaded. TC does not require a data plan since it does not attempt to download over-the-air, it works completely offline. And yes it is FREE.

You know what, I am a newb to smartphones so at first I did proceed with caution cause I see they made it very simple to connect to the internet and pay extremely high per mb fees. I checked online with my service provider (AT&T) and they really make it difficult to discern what is internet usage what is text message data usage. I called and the level 1 cust service person did not even know so I said badword it!! I will let it rip and just launch Google maps and use all the features (traffic info, address search) and if I get nailed for some data usage I will claim ignorance and try to get a credit because it was my first month, I am new to this..yadda yadda. Well I got my bill and nothing extra was charged so, unless there is some delay in billing, you do not get charged for traffic info. I know if you go online from a comp that you can get traffic info for free so I assume this is broadcast through GPS satellites and if you have a program that will show it for a charge (Telenav) you will pay but if you have a program that is susidized buy an advertising giant like Google you will get it for free (Google Maps). This is just my perception and my own experience. If I am wrong please feel free to chime in because I see so many versions of what happens and what you can and cannot use to get free GPS info to the i617. Bottom line I have not incurred a data usage charge and it has been over a billing cycle since I started using Google Maps on my i617. Actually if you cannot use the traffic info why on earth would you need GPS. Yes it is nice to show off your free GPS on your phone to your buddys after you had a few but for the day to day commute?!! Even I can remember how to get to work after...well after a few weeks or so. Seriously though, the traffic info is the most useful day to day thing to see if there is a cig alert and you should avoid a certain route. I just today installed WM 6.1 and the first thing I did was install GMaps and it worked right away without the Modaco application. Some say it connects quicker with 6.1 but I have not tested that yet but I did sit it next to my window here at work and I have 5 satellites and I see traffic flow all the way home. I am pleased as hell!
Guest drumthrasher109 Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 (edited) My first post here :). I just cannot find any good program for my Blackjack II that doesn't use the internet! I installer Terra whatever, and it doesn't even startup (says it has to close...maybe I need to restart the phone?). I don't even know how to get the maps working right...I want to get street level road maps onto my phone and use them like you would a normal GPS. ANYONE? Actually I'll try Terracrosser out again, I didn't have the compact .net framework junk installed. Terracrosser seems to be working fine, but it doesn't want to connect to any satellites. I did the whole MoDaCo GPS hack and I used GPStest to test it and it was working... I got a few maps for my location using the program on the PC and it works! I just wish it was a real GPS, with real-time updates and stuff. Is there anything like that? Edited February 8, 2009 by drumthrasher109
Guest alana0j Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 I hope this is a good topic for my question...I have Google Maps on my BJ2, I put it on there quite a while ago. I also downloaded the GPS unlocker a while back ...but Google Maps still can't seem to get the GPS to initialize. Is there something else I need to do to get my GPS working?
