Guest Aidy12 Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 Hey, I live in Australia and recently bought an Omnia, and yeah it's great but has no 850MHz HSDPA. I just wondered if it had the hardware for 850 built-in, like the HTC Touch, where it was enabled after a firmware upgrade, so if it was possible to enable it on the OMNIA. Thanks, Aidan

Guest EddieMx Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 its possible but not yet~~~im waiting too No, i dont think it will be possible, to get additional 3G bands support with just upgrading software. (yes, too bad!!) According to GSMARENA: "...You may as well even remember that they initially announced the Omnia as having tri-band UMTS support, while only later on it became clear that the three bands will not find place on a single model. Nevertheless, it seems that they are in a hurry to remedy things with a spanking new US version..." http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_omnia_turn...s_-news-584.php The Omnia that will support 850/1900 for 3G will be called i907 and it will consist in new hardware for supporting these bands!! ;)
Guest pidsw Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 That news article is a little old, the FCC filings were released earlier which spawned a number of questions on various boards. While there is no definite answer the general consensus is that it will be possible to "upgrade" via firmware. The main rationale for this is the fact that the internal diagrams show that the radio hardware on the I900 is a Qualcomm chipset advertised to support the triband UMTS and Quadband GSM/Edge. Designing the internal shipsets, memory controllers, etc for the hardware takes a fair bit of time, changing the design to remove parts is rarely worth the time, when filing for FCC in the US they provide different firmware (I907XXXX) so that it doesn't "Leak" into bands such as 2100. The I910 will have different hardware and it will need at least a new radio chipset that supports CDMA,
