Some small annoyances - Omnia i900

I have made a big move from an N95 which I loved to the Omnia (ex PPC user)...hated it first, now I love it.

But there are some things that do bug me that I need to get off my chest (yeah yeah I know, what about all the GOOD things….):

1. No Bluetooth icon at the top of the screen….nor Bluetooth headset connection icon….why not? It’s sorely missed.

2. I cannot believe no standard audio output jack – big BIG mistake

3. Where’s my user manual? I mean a decent one.

4. Camera often says “not enough video memory”…what a crock…sort it out please – I keep missing those “moments” and it’s starting to really grate me

5. A very thin stylus that slipped inside the casing would not have been that much of an issue (although I never use one now)

6. Video should have been at 30fps in VGA…Nokia walks all over this video capability

7. WiFi strength is somewhat pitiful

8. Dids I mention the stupid dongle for the audio....real stupid

OK, a few things I like just before I get flamed:

1. Audio via Coreplayer is actually pretty good (once you turn it up via tweak)

2. Battery is not bad, not bad at all

3. GSM Signal strength is good

4. Size

5. Does pretty much everything, and more

6. And yes, other than in direct sunlight the screen is pretty good too (in spite of non VGA and millions of colours)

Anyway, feeling much better now - thanks

cant really solve them issues, but 2. - theres a standard jack on the Samsung headset. 4. press and hold the menu soft key on the top right hand side of the phone which will open task manager - and close off some apps. not sure if theres something that could automatically close off your apps but I'm sure there would be.

the problem of video memory is not due to open programs(did it to me without any open program..)

i'll check the camera now with the new firmware to see if the problem is still there(at the moment ev is ok..)

1 - headset shows as connected for me top bar via bluetooth

2 - Get some motorola S9 headphones (wireless stero headphones - much better sound than the stock earphones)

3 - its windows mobile, so go to windows mobile site for help needed.

4 - this is a problem with earlier ROMS, flash to a later rom (h3 for example) to get this sorted)

5 - I dont use stylus but i agree.

Omnia has a lot planned for later ROM releases i here so this phone is only going to get better.

Personally I use the Sony HBH-DS200 bluetooth solution for the headphone issue, works a treat ;)

As for the Wi-Fi signal, it's neither as strong or as fast as it is on my N95 8Gb

One big issue to add is the lack of bluetooth voice dialing, a feature most basic handsets had 3-4 years ago!!!

Thanks all...some follow ups:

- I have a lovely pair of noise cancelling AT in ear headphones so bluettoh would be a step back. I know the pop port has an audio port but my N95 had one IN THE PHONE....so when going in my car, simply plug the audio in and I had an MP3 player....now I have to remember to bring the extra bit of kit..

- I know how to use Windows Mobile - been on it since Philips nino days...what I want is a decent Samsung manual on the phone. Anyway, time solves that and let's face it, manufacturers are using these sites and ways to get around costly manual development....we do all the testing and reporting and work....that's also why they release things too early...to let us fix them through sharing the experience. Clever folk these PC and phone companies.

-Scared shirtless to flash, but maybe will try

And finally,

- So do you all really get a bluetooth icon at the top, and a little headphone when connected? I have absolutely nothing....can't even tell if Bluetooth is on by looking at my SPB Shell home....

Hey, I still love the phone...looking forward ot resolving some if these issues with an awesome Samsung official ROM update.

You get the icon only when A2DP (so for stereo music) is connected. When you pair with a normal phone headset, no icon is shown on top. For this you need to go the the phone screen (press the dial button), and you will see the headset icon at the top right, next to another icon that I don't know the meaning of.

Does this headset allow FM tuning with A2DP?

Not so sure about the "step back" with using bluetooth, With the unit I'm using with a pair of sennheiser cx500's if anything the sound seems slightly better, a clearer more defined bass. Appreciate the problem with the 3.5mm jack though, I use my N95 8Gb with the supplied AV cable fitted into the in car DVD to play music and video as an AV source.

For the Omnia perhaps this could be an option?

Bearing in mind I don't have one so can't really recommend it, just may be a solution for you?

I know you didn't mean it this way, but it sounds like you're complaining a bit too much... no phone is going to be perfect, even the Omnia.

I actually really like the headset dongle... at least they provide the adapter. Having that dongle means I can use my own Shure headphones to listen to the radio and send/recieve phone calls too. Yeah, it's a little too long, but it works well.

The only thing I agree with is the stylus that should have been inside the body. But I hung the lipstick stylus on my keychain, so if I ever need to go into a non-finger friendly app I can just use that.

All in all I would say that it is my favoite phone so far (but then I haven't tried anything from Nokia lately)

The stylus does bother me. I use it for taking notes - especially when I need quick diagrams.

I prefer the width of the IPhone. The Touch HD seems incredible in this regard.

The IPhone has a more sensitive screen, especially w.r.t. sliding (but then I prefer to have the ability to use a styllus, so a capacitative screen is out)

More buttons. I really miss the massive number of buttons on the Titan and Kaiser. The Touch Pro is worse in this regard but good enough.

The trackpad is a lot better with later Roms, but I still prefer a good dpad.

I have not had much of a problem with WIFI signal strength, but I do notice that the batterylife with wifi on is great.

It seems like most of the ROM chefs only work with HTC devices (XDA and PPC Geeks).

I do hope that I get HSDPA in the US with the right firmware. If it were an HTC device I would have it by now (not because of HTC, but because of the fact that XDA only supports HTC devices)

There are times when hardware keyboards really are useful.

Yea, why aint there no bluetooth icon on the top bar, especially when the phone has been pair'ed successfully. My Motorola Q had that.

WiFi is a bit weak on this, true that.
