Let's sort out TomTom once and for all!

**Update Nov 26th** My current GPS Nav of choice is CoPilot 7 (see for more info below)

Well since my original posts there have been new roms/new gps software versions so I thought I'd keep you updated.

Igo 8.3.2.64837 - Best version yet and very stable. Still works perfectly with the Omnia. Bear in mind NavN have changed the file structure of the data.zip file and therefore if you upgrade to the latest build, you will need to aquire a new data.zip with the Omnia's resolution and the updated structure. This build is particularly good because they have lowered the amout of processor useage and as a result it runs far smoother. Also it seems to never randomly crash any more!

TomTom 7.910.9185 - Still stuck in the pit of sporadic satellite locking. Will work (craply) with splitting software. Not recommended for the Omnia at present. Personally, I think it now feels dated. At one time I refused to use anything else, but now forced into seeking alternative realms of navigation, TomTom 7 lacks many of the features that make sat nav feel like it's evolving. Even version 8 (not available for PDA's) still looks crap. It's a shame what global domination does for pushing the boundaries. Anyway, I'll be waiting for TomTom to pull their finger out, and release a non-HTC release of this software, or some clever bod to reverse engineer it and include better support for internal gps chips (unlikely)

CoPilot 7.7.0.134 - Works 98% perfectly. No problems with GPS, no splitters required, but can take a moment to trigger car movement after stopping in the vehicle. Minor issue though, now my GPS nav software of choice. ALK actually let me transfer my license from my old XDA Orbit 2 to the Omnia - Very good of them indeed! I personally think it looks nearly as good as Igo and and ALK are integrating 3d buildings in soon. Also, you can track your position online which is very sweet!

If anything, I hope this helps you remain informed about the latest nav updates! ;)

**Old Thread**

Okay, I am fed up now with my Omnia's GPS!!! Yes that's right FED UP!!!

Okay - I'm calm now. So, I have Co-Pilot 7 (which I got with my XDA Orbit 2) and I have TomTom 7 in which I aquired the software from t'internet and bought the map.

No GPSGate

TomTom - Some com settings allow TomTom to see the receiver but it never triangulates, and thus I never receive a signal

CoPilot - Will get a signal without GPSGate, but movement whilst driving is somewhat choppy.

**EDIT** - Igo8 Works perfectly! No extra software required

With GPSGate

TomTom & CoPilot - GPS fix within 3-5 seconds! However my experience of GPSGate is poor. When I drive, I have to say the movement is VERY smooth...mmmmm. BUT - every 20 seconds, the UTC time cocks up, the position is about 2 miles ahead of where I am in real time, then it eventually finds where I am again. That's in TomTom. In Copilot, frequently it will be constantly 500 yards ahead of where I am, or the arrow will be poisitioned off the road, in some random location (close to my actual path). Is this just a bad GPSGate setting?

So - with all that, it would be useful (I know it's already been documented) but it would be good to get a post with everyone's settings. If TomTom is working, please list EVERYTHING you have. Your GPS com ports, the XTRA settings you might or might not use, the baud rates, the TomTom settings.

Many thanks

I posted this awhile back. I tried everything including soft resets and deleting GPSID logs.

Hmm. Lots of different issues and methods concerning gps.

I did some testing and Installed Garmin mobileXT and a bluechart from my Garmin 60csx. So now I'm running both TT 7 and Garmin mobileXT on the i900.

I then turned off GPS Gate and powered on a Socket BT gps and put it outside. I set all Baud I could find to 4800, then setup TT and Garmin to receive gps through BT. Garmin locked on within 5 seconds. TT only had the 'greyed out' satellites and would not 'lock on'

I then started GPS gate and setup a virtual BT serial port and within 5 secs both Garmin and TT had locked on.

So even with using a seperate GPS input I cannot get TT to work using the i900 unless GPS gate is on. I even set TT up on a old iPaq pocet PC and it picked up the BT GPS within seconds without using GPS gate.

That's really odd. I wonder if anyone has got any further input/ideas on this?

Posted

I've got no problems using a seperate BT GPS receiver. Using a Holux GPSSlim240 (with SirfstarIII chipset) for that. Works just fine in TT7 (7.450.9028) without GPSGate.

Using the internal GPS I've never gotten TT7 to work without GPSGate. With GPSGate the performance is as above, fine while driving, but choppy and off by upto 500m when standing still. The signal indicator in TT7 also jumps around quite a bit, going from full (5 bars) back to 1 bar every few seconds.

Fingers crossed that TT will release a dedicated Omnia version...

i dont understand how people can't get tomtom 7 working without gpsgate. i use Other NMEA GPS, 4800 baud rate, com 3, GPS status the comes up poor gps reception(so it does find the gps hardware).I suggest going into enhanced GPS in settings selecting Enable, then click Xtra data download, once it has downloaded click disable again to save data costs unless you have a good data tarriff. load tomtom back up and give it time for its first lock, it took me approx 10mins after that the average lock time was 20 secs ,and when Tomtom is in use, its smooth and accurate. unfortunatly my omnia is away back to samsung for repair so i am unable do to anymore tests atm, but others have confirmed Gpsgate isn't required for Tomtom.

I have been using TomTom 7.450.9028 for the best part of a month now, with the following settings:

i900

Software: Com3

Hardware: Com 9

Baud rate: 4800

Access: Manage gps automatically (Ticked)

Enhanced Gps: Enabled

Auto Download: Enabled

Interval: 24 hours (Don't know how much data this uses, and don't really care, as I don't pay the bill!)

TomTom

Other Nmea

Baud rate: 4800

Com 3

The first initial lock on takes a couple of minutes, but there after, 10-15 seconds every time!

I do not use gps gate at all, and still get a lock, even indoors within 10-15 seconds.

Prior to updating from DXHH1 to DXHH3, I would have to soft reset the device almost

every single time. However, since the update, well over a week ago now, I no longer need to

soft reset at all, it just seems to work and lock on every time.

I have found that it is very smooth whilst driving, and appears to be spot on accurate 99% of the time.

I actually use this and prefer it to the built in sat nav in my car!

Hope someone finds this helpful.

BTW bloody great forum, I have learnt so much from you guys, many thanks to all of you.

This is NOT getting a lock though.

Everyone can see "poor gps signal" but that means sweet FA when you need a strong signal for it to be of use.

Well, I am using Tom Tom 6 (I know, but it still knows where I live) and I can't get a fix with or without GPS Gate. Settings are exactly as in the post above, but all I get is waiting for a valid GPS signal. However long I wait!

Before I go out to get a "first" lock I do click the xtra data download. When it comes back from samsung i'll try with out downloading.

I'll also try it at work, where my old N95 could never get a lock.

peoples location when trying without GPSgate must be a factor. Where I live its a clear view no tall objects in the way. But at work that will be a test.

My Settings:

External GPS

Software: Com 2

Hardware: Com 9

Baud rate: 4800

Access: Manage gps automatically (Ticked)

Enhanced GPS

XTRA Enable: Enabled

Auto Download: Enabled

Interval: 24

GPS Gate 2.0.1.118

Input: COM2

Output: Virtual COM6 / (All NMEA) NMEA Filter

Tom Tom 7

Other Nmea

Baud rate: 9600

Com 6

I start GPS Gate... then start Tom Tom.... by the time TT7 has loaded ( a couple of seconds ), GPS Gate already has a fix and i am away. (First initial fix after setting all this up took longer but now its extremely fast)

If i dont use GPS Gate... it doesnt matter where i am... Tom Tom will not get a fix... i have tried all sorts of different com ports and settings.

I actually use this and prefer it to the built in sat nav in my car!

I've just tried these settings with some result...

First off, TT7 shows me no satellites at all on the gps status page, and no indication of signal strength on any of the channels. After about 10 mins, several grey circles appeared indicating possible satellites in view, with all signals showing 0. In the end, it took TT7 almost 30 mins (!) to find 4 satellites, and give a blue signal strength indication on those. However, it lost position again within 10 secs or so and was unable to re-aquire it. All this with an unblocked view of the sky.

So yes, TT7 seems to be able to get a fix without GPSGate, but it's just not very practical for me right now. With GPSGate, TT7 works reasonably well over most of the time.

Funny you mention a firmware upgrade. I'm still on my original HH1 (i900XKHH1 - dutch) and am trying to find an upgrade for that. Hope that helps a bit, but for the time I'll just stick to GPSGate.

tomtom 7.450.9028 (i dont think that the version is important )

I900XXHH1/ACHH1

phone i900BUHG5

soft reset your omnia when you change the port from com3 to com2. Than run the Tomtom and wait a few moments - first fix is very slow (i dont know why).

Exactly the same story here: no luck with TT6 using a slight variation of the settings above:

GPS: SW COM2, HW: COM9, 4800 baud

TomTom6: "Other NMEA", COM2, whatever the baud (4800 or 9600, see also below)

Phone is flashed with ROM version DXHH1

Another issue is that when using GPSGate I need to set up the receiver each time I start TT, but I can set the baud to 9600 for the "Franson COM..."

So pls, when reporting do mention the TT version you are using (afterall the "7.45" version + variations are not legit... ;) ) and ROM version

i gave up on tom tom a while ago. Its too much of a hassle.

And from what ive seen the navigation on it isnt that great anyway.

I use IGO 8 now, which works perfectly. No GPS Gate, no xtra download, nothing. I start the program, it automatically detects my settings and im off to go.

Well I tried Igo8 and it's perfect! Although because it hogs so many resources, it makes music skip while playing simultaneously ;) As my car has a bluetooth head unit, I need both resources to run at once.

I installed the new Italian Rom and I got signal with Com 3 for about 1 second! Then it went again.... boooohooooo! Any more ideas guys?

I’ve used IGO 8 and it’s good, but for some reason when I search in this one town I get a fatal error so I use Garmin XT which is also good.

Is there any other users who can confirm that they can get TomTom 7.450 working with the new firmware HH3 as oppose to the HH1?

I think the fix may be in the HH3.

Please report if your unit works with HH3.

Thanks

I used Tomtom from release 3. I couldn't got a correct gps link with my Omnia. It was very random the signal. One day 2 minutes to fix satellites, other day 15 minutes. It was realy carp.

So I decide to change to IGO 8. And what a surprise. Advantages:

- pretty navigation screen

- very fast satellites fix even inside a building near from a window

- a lot of new fonctions

- not only one big map from western europe. Igo have on map for country but you can see them all for navigation. So it's faster then Tomtom because it runs only one country map at time.

- faster reculculation of itinerary if you dont respect igo programmation

Against:

- difficult to change from Tomtom. Everything is different from Tomtom (navigation buttons, setting buttons, etc)

Same here -- I still have the TomTom3 CDs. Since we're veering OT, I'll bite:

1) Can you do A->B planning as in TT i.e. disregarding of your current location ?

2) Niceties in TT like Route planning (e.g. avoid certain/toll roads), Favorites, etc, etc ?

OT over and out.

Florian

P.S. As above, my TT4 plays pretty nice with GPSgate as per HH1. Also, on long drives I'm using my reliable Holux BT receiver anyway...

OT I think you will find is a short version of Off Topic.

This means that the posts are not related the the actual main topic.

I'm afraid HH3 has no bearing on TomTom working without GPSGate or not. I've tried G5, HH1, HH3 and this new italian one which I can't remember the name of ;) Still no luck! It's doing my nut in. I wish I could work this out....and I am using the version of TomTom that's reported to work fine.

I wonder if it's anything to do with it not having longitude and lat? I know my GPSPhoto thingy doesn't work :-/ Yet some peoples does. Any ideas?

Well - a week later and still no joy. This is far too upsetting ;) Anyone else had any better progress than me?
