Guest DEV-O Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 Hi, First of all hello to all. After doing some lurking around here and other sites, I founds this was the best for community information and news, since I now have an Omnia I decided to sign up. I was glad to see Paul was an advocate (and owner) of the handset and was able to offer up useful info and good tips... intro> So the reason for my post: Since having seen the Touch HD, I (as alot of people) felt suddenly underwhelmed about my current handset. I just love the res and size of the screen its a great offering within the iphone form factor. So it got me thinking, just how much bigger and better can these screens get, at what point will screen sizes top out (within the constraints of FF). Whilst digging around for answers I found this.java script:bbc_pop() http://www.i4u.com/hot/LG.html This enables screens to effectively be built up to the edge of the device, I wonder if this tech can be employed with touch capability? Because if it could this could really develop the real estate for the screen size. So with this in mind I decided to use the old calibrated ruler trick to see how far the Touch HD screen could be pushed with borderless (moldless) LCD screen production technology. here are the results? So setting the ruler@ 3.8" to match the original screen diagonal (the whitish screen) I then created the larger screen and positioned it in a best fit for the handset. Where Ive circled the bevelled edge in the side profile, Im suggesting this would be flattened to allow the front facing buttons to be shifted down to allow for the screen, and also the Mic and secondary camera would need their respective positions adjusting to squeeze them in up top. The result is a screen size of 4.25 inches in the diagonal. or 10.8 cm. I think combined with the Tegra chip and Windows Mobile 7 this would be the very ultimate in usability, power, function and form factor. There could also then be the potential to up the screen res to something like 580x1000. I mean if the Xperia can cram 480 x 800 in 3.2" Then we could do 580 x 1000. Maybe full blown XP/vista with mobile interface would be doable? So just for fun I have summarised the above in a timeline: in 1 year) WM7, 4.2" 480x800 screen, Tegra Arm11+GPU (SoC).?? in 2 years) WM7 enhanced (x86 compatible), 4.2" 480x800 screen, Intel Atom gen1.?? in 3 years) Vista (derivative) 4.2" 580x1024, Atom gen2.?? Would be fun to have some of the more learned people give their thoughts about where its all going and where it could end up being? PS: Dont flame me too hard, im new to phone tech and still learning ;)
