Guest Knight_Rider Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 I basically wrote a letter to Orange telling them the problems I was having with my SPV heres their reply ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Sir Thank you for your mail. I am sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with the Orange SPV. The SPV Promotional Pack is subject to a fair usage policy. High usage is currently defined as 10MB per month. Orange reserves the right to request that customers exceeding the limits of 10MB reduce their usage. If usage continues to exceed these limits, Orange will not charge for the extra usage, but may remove the SPV Promotional Pack from the customers account.. Orange will notify customers if the promotional pack is going to be removed and customers will then be changed onto a standard GPRS tariff of their choice. Over the last few weeks, Orange has been working with HTC and Microsoft to deliver a software update to its customers that will improve the functionality of the SPV the worlds first phone powered by Microsoft.Orange can confirm that its Danish business is the second Orange company to have released a software update for the SPV, following on from Switzerlands update at the end of last year. Each update is tailored to the specific network settings and infrastructure of each country network and has instructions on how to successfully download the update in that countrys language. Therefore, Orange customers should not download updates to their SPV from a foreign Orange site. A software update for customers in the UK and France is due to be available from their respective Orange websites soon. This update is intended to improve the speed and functionality of the SPV as well as extend the battery life. Orange is currently working with Microsoft to provide a software update that will solve a security issue on the Orange SPV. During the development of the SPV, Orange, working with Microsoft, enabled an extra layer of security on customers handsets in order to ensure that an application has been digitally signed through an official certification authority. This means that if an application is found to be detrimental to the performance of the phone, the certificate can be immediately revoked by Orange and the application suspended. Recently, a website detailed a way of disabling this security feature, allowing a developer to install applications on their SPV without obtaining an official digital signature. This unapproved application would only be able to run on an SPV that had this security feature disabled. Therefore, unless a customer pro-actively applies this process to their SPV - which we obviously advise against - we do not perceive this as posing any risk to the security of our customers or their enjoyment of the phone. Nevertheless, we intend to resolve this issue by making a software update available to SPV customers who may be concerned by reports in the press. Customers will be able to access this update through the Orange Update application in the programmes menu of their SPV. We are working with Microsoft to make this update available as soon as possible. Developers who wish to create applications that all Orange SPV customers can access should continue to go through the certification process which is currently available on the following website: www.geotrust.com/codesigning/smartphone/index.htm Orange will also be providing a resource for SPV developers on the web at the end of February which will explain how they can obtain an SPV for development purposes as well as detailed information on certification signing. Our Customer Service representatives always aim to provide the highest level of customer care and I am sorry you feel this was not achieved on this occasion. However, if you wish to discuss anything with us, please contact our Data Support Team on 156 from your Orange phone, whre a trained representative will be happy to help you. Kind regards Anthony Orange Customer Services

Guest xanadu Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Yawn.......... These letters are getting boring now. we all know what problems there are with the SPV. Why not just wait for the update due next week or very soon, and then see if there are any issues. This is why Paul closed the Bug Track........as people just keep repeating themselves with things we already know.
Guest Knight_Rider Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 warner I think their highly trained in the following "Hello" "Sorry its not our department" And then pressing the recall button and putting you through to someone else that does the same
Guest Knight_Rider Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Dont you think that Orange will also be providing a resource for SPV developers on the web at the end of February which will explain how they can obtain an SPV for development purposes as well as detailed information on certification signing. Could be interesting though?
Guest pupton Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 My reading of this message is that we will have the choice to install the update that fixes the "security loophole" as if it's a seperate component on the impending update....
Guest ClintEastman Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 My reading of this message is that we will have the choice to install the update that fixes the "security loophole" as if it's a seperate component on the impending update.... Sounds like that to me too, they talk about the patch as a seperate update. Maybe there not as fussed as we thought.
Guest Yousaf Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 i agree with xanadu in waiting i personally think the danish update will be the same as uk update bar the localisation settings which well i guess id rather have installed via the update rather than then wasting time trying 2 configure myself.
Guest SirGaz Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 As one of the other topics states, the SIM swap mathod now no longer works after applying the Danish update. Maybe this is the Security patch that O are on about :?:
