Backup, flash firmware and restore. Will it work ?

Hi

I have a vodafone branded omnia, which has the very annoying bug of automatically answering an incomming call when the phone is in text entry mode or opera is running.

I would like to flash to a samsung firmware, I hate how operators have to mess about and screw up the firmware.

Would I be able to backup my phone, flash to a new firmware and then do a system restor to get all my programs and settings back.

Cheers

Hiya mate

I also have an I900V-- agree, Vodafones firmware is a complete shambles.

Here's what I did to enjoy non branded sweetness:

Used PIMBackup to backup SMS, Email, Contacts and the call list. Charged to 100%.. Hard reset the phone.

Ran the firmware update. (DXHI1 seems to be the newest and most stable to go for) Hard reset again.

Restored PIMBackup.

I posted more detail on this thread.. (http://www.modaco.com/content/i900-omnia-http-i900-modaco-com/272799/auto-answering-omnia/) also Icemans guide here (http://www.modaco.com/content-page/272065/have-you-tried-to-flash-a-branded-samsung-omnia-i900-what-happened/page/20/) is what I followed to flash the device.

Let me know how you get on ;)

Thanks for your reply, backing up email contacts etc is not too much of a worry because I sync with outlook on my pc, so its all on there. What I would like though is to be able to restore programs and setting as it would take me hours to get it back as I have it now.

What I have ended up doing is making a list of all programs and device settings I need to change, and I work through that list after a reflash...

Did you try a restore, or just assume it would not work ?

Have not tried, but I have often read that restoring a backup on a different ROM can cause issues with some applications, which makes sense...

I've updated the firmware and tried to restore from flash using sprite backup, it gives you an option to select to restore mode as it alerts you that the backup was made either not from this phone or that the rom or firmware has changed. I selected the rom update option and it restored fine, or so I thought, the phone seemed a little sluggish and when you go to remove programs there's nothing in the list.

I ended up re-installing all my software again although my phone was non branded to begin with.

Its not recommended, since you can lose new firmware version-specific registry customizations, even if backup software will try to preserve then.

I tried Resco backup and spb back up ... both .. !..after updating firmware. I tried to restore using these 2 programs.... none working perfectly...spb mobile shell functions unexpectedly and incorrectly............. had to hard reset.. and reinstall was the only way.

PS. one time I had password lock on my phone........ after restored using spb back up... I could not even get into my phone, despite typing correct password etc. I had no choice but re-flashed the firmware again..

however... the postive thing is that if you have a basic phone setting with no other software installed............ spb backup can restore the function fine.

OK thanks guys, seems that reinstalling everything is the only way to go. Also means I wont want to be flashing my firmware too often either. Are there still problems with the latest firmware. Is it worth me waiting for a bit longer for a bug free release.

I backed up my settings before flashing firmware, but also as part of evaluating a backup client. I found that when I did a COMPLETE restore, all apps and messages ... everything was back. BUT it has restored my CSC (part of the rom, but unsure of what) back to the initial level.

So these backups are useful when you have your machine set up how you like. But only if you then stick another app on and it screws it all up!
