Turn off Data on Idle Connection?

Is there anyway to turn off the data while the connection is idle?

I have my email check every few hours but the connection remains active after it finishes checking.

I'd like the data to automatically disable when it's not being used.

Is there an app for that? Or perhaps a registry hack/edit ?
