Hi guys I'm new, so please be gentle with me.

Hubby has just purchased an Omnia -(16 gb, Orange but unlocked).

He has spent the last week getting familiar with his new toy, he's happy but for one thing..... he can't get the Garmin GPS working.

He followed the instructions that came with it. He keeps getting a message saying " won't work with external GPS"- ( or something like that).

Could someone please post an " idiots guide" that I could follow. I'd love to get the GPS working for him.... (surprise for when he gets home|) lol.

One problem I encountered is... I can't find where to turn on the internal GPS.

Oh! he has version 4.10.4 WP.

TIA

Tilly

Hi thanks for your reply.

The settings are all as you posted.

The message I got.....connection allowed to Garmin GPS device only.

I just clicked " enable".... new message...unable to locate GPS,please verify device is on and device is in range.

Heck! don't even know if that's the external or internal GPS it was trying to connect to.

my settings for external gps are

gps program port = com8

gps hardware port = com9

access tab - managed automatically is checked

in garmin xt -

find remote gps under system/settings

then select disabled

a menu will pop up - select serial gps and then enable (it should auto select com8)

the initial fix could take a few minutes

Is it an original version? maybe you haven't unlocked it to work with internal gps (sw.unl file)

bought off ebay ??

garmin software is a free download, and once installed the software will prompt you to buy activation and map licences before it will run.

bobobird, he has the licences, but he can't seem to activate it through the internal GPS.

A friend of a friend bought from the same place and his works.

ahhhhhh goood, i was worried he might have been scammed.

yes, try the port splitter option mentioned earlier.

or for a commercial solution there is gpsgate.

in port splitter -

input port = com8 (as suggested earlier)

output to virtual port 6

Thanks again bobobird... I do appreciate you help.

I'll get hubby to read the thread again when he gets home.

I spent hours yesterday trying to get the GPS working- ( no such luck), when hubby got home he was hours trying too. He's now taken off all he added and is going to start afresh this evening.

If you hear some distant screaming it will probably be us roflol.

Wouldn't mind but we have a good sat nav sat in the drawer.

while at it try this solution - most such gate apps do more or less the same

Okie Dokie. ;)

Hubby has just reinstalled the software-(after incorrectly naming a file).

Do the file names need to be upper or lower case? and when saving do they have to be saved as.....

Ansi, unicode, unicode andian, or, UTF-8.

TIA

here's the basic step to install garmin

my omnia settings are:-

Start->Settings->System->Enhanced GPS

- XTRA Enable - yes

- Auto Download - no

Start->Settings->System->External GPS

- GPS program port - COM3

- GPS hardware port - COM9 (baud 4800,9600,19200 all working, not sure what's this for)

- Manage GPS automatically (recomended) - yes

Garmin installation -> on SD card not My Storage.

Activation -> card id needed. once activated you should see 2 files in your SD Card\Garmin folder with .UNL extention, main program activation = SW.UNL, map activation = same name with the map with extention .UNL as well. for my case GMAPSUPP.UNL

you can also check for activation status in garmin mxt -> Settings -> about. it should show only software unit id

map activation status, you will see it at Garmin -> tools -> manage my data -> map set and it should show the correct map name.

in garmin, mine was automatically using COM3:COM3. it works all the while for me, just that the scanning of signal upon starting takes some time. and if your gprs is disabled (modaco nodata) it will never get connected.
