Guest casper508 Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Is there any improvement in the media player's video quality? Is it any faster? If other functions are faster then I'd presume media performance should've improved as well. Cas
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 It does seem to run a little smoother but it could be just me ;)
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 It does seem to run a little smoother but it could be just me ;) I think you're right, audio seems a little smoother - was near perfect anyway. Occasionally it'd jump a bit when playing the first song on the playlist, doesn't happen any more. Video is a lot smoother though - the Beavis and Butthead test-cartoon i watched this afternoon had far fewer stops and starts than before.
Guest casper508 Posted January 28, 2003 Report Posted January 28, 2003 Now thats something to look forward to in the UK and French update ! ;) Cas
Guest frijj2k Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 I've noticed an improvement. I havnt seen it skip once.. ( Yet :-) )
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 I've noticed an improvement. I havnt seen it skip once.. ( Yet :-) ) Yep, I've just tried composing a message while listening to an mp3, just one small skip and that was that. Ace :-) I suspect that all the code in the phone has simply been streamlined in the updated ROM, seeing as everything seems to run faster/better - nice one MS...
Guest ClintEastman Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Isn't the microsoft Version number the same as before? If it is, and the version numbers are right, that would say to me that its orange thet buggered the software up! And don't i remember the microsoft project leader being asked what the aps in the startup folder do, and he said that thay where all Orange's and didn't know (don't quote me on that, you would think that MS would be fiddlin with all the software on the phone at some point).

True - I still have v. 3.0.12255.0 in mine so what you're saying could well be right. Maybe it was that Orange message-count plugin that was causing so many problems with the SPV (seeing as it doesn't work any more)? Whatever, Orange made a good job of messing the s/w up then; Media Player is clearly better than before, I stuck a few new (different) cartoons on my SD-card just to check - there's virtually no skipping at all, they're perfectly watchable. Suppose this is also related to the massive improvement in menu-speed (which surely must be a bit of MS software?) Like I said before, the coding must have been made more efficient to give such a big general improvement, though maybe it's simply improved memory management?
Guest Hax Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Could just be that Orange had some task running off a timer and that task took up far to much of the processor bandwidth and/or the timer was set to tick too quickly. Much more likely if (as it appears) MS haven't updated their software. Could also just be that when Orange rebuilt the code this time, they switched on the compiler optimisations ;)

Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 ...or maybe Orange have simply overclocked the CPU just to shut us up - they don't care if we end up sitting with a pile of melted plastic in our hands after the guarantee's run out ;)
Guest ClintEastman Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 It's not running at full speed as it is, so maybe they have! http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic...5&highlight=mhz All the specs say it SHOULD be 132Mhz.... Not 84Mhz...... http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/smartphone...are/default.asp
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 Niel Enns from MS posted recently in microsoft.public.smartphone that the CPU is running at Intel's recommended max speed - whatever that may be...
