Charging issue

So far i'm really happy with my Omnia but there is one problem I hate. Right now i'm at work and my battery has run down. I have my USB cable with me but when I plug it in the phone the stupid thing tries to switch on. It gets to the samsung screen and then switches off, then it starts all over again and repeats this over and over but doesn't actually charge the battery. Is there any way of stopping this dumb behaviour?
