Guest Midahed Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 From my brief exposure to it, ActiveSync appears to be a singularly crappy bit of software. I expected it to be able to communicate with my PC over my wireless network, but it doesn't. ;) It also doesn't help that I mainly use Linux and only run Windows as a guest OS under VMware Workstation. That approach works fine for those rare occasions where I have to use Windows-based software, but it's just proving too difficult to get ActiveSync working. Is there an alternative to ActiveSync, bearing in mind all I want is an easy way of installing software on my Omnia. Apart from the Outlook syncing features, is there anything that ActiveSync does which cannot be achieved by setting the USB connection mode to 'Mass Storage' and treating the it like a memory stick? Or is ActiveSync the only way to access the Omnia's internal memory?
Guest FutureDirt Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 You only have to use activesync to install software onto your wm device IF the install file is a normal windows app. Alot of pieces of software are available as windows mobile installers (cab files usually). If you have a cab file then yes, you can simply set the USB connection mode to mass storage (either internal storage or storage card). You then simply copy the cab file onto your device and run it from the device itself to install. As far as i know though... there is no alternative to activesync or windows mobile device centre for ppc installers that run from windows.

Kpm-synce open-synce-plugin kcemirror (remote desktop display of your phone) If you do a bit of digging you'll find how to install these to get them working under linux, im using Kubuntu and now have full sync with email/calander/todo's etc. I have found these are far better than activesync (well it is microcrap after all). Swapping between phones is a doddle (htc tytn II, htc touch, samsung i900) linux doesn't care just pairs and carries on. go here to start you off. http://surajram.eu.org/2008/06/sync-windows-mobile-with-linux/
