Samsung Modem

I was receiving the Port Create retry error on flashing my omnia. I had installed the Samsung modem driver per instructions which are very straight forward (i thought) and it says it installed successfully. I run the HI3 update and everything was fine until it got to switching form USB to phone, to presumably flash the phone rom and I got the

Port Create retry (25)

Port Create retry (24)

Port Create retry (23)

.........

Port Create retry (0)

error.

The phone now reboots but with a small phone and orange warning triangle, indicating I believe that the Phone flash didn't work. The phone PDA status is at HI3, whilst the Phone remains at HG3. The phone still works and the the pda seems to work with the updates from HI3.

I have tried this repeatedly on 3 different XP boxes to reach a successful flash completion but i believe that the Samsung modem driver just isn't installing correctly on any of them, as confirmed under device manager.

Now everyone else here is flashing away, so they are obviously getting the modem driver to install correctly. I've tried installing, uninstalling, rebotting on 3 different xp computers with different service pack levels and no joy. It says it's installed perfetly, but it isn't. Each time, I am simply using setup.exe. (what am i missing). I've tried installing it manually etc etc.

I've seen a few threads here and there with vague ideas, but is there a definitive answer for this problem. I must say that Iphone hacking even last year where we had to do all sorts of things was a breeze compared to what should be a relatively simple operation. Having said that I do believe that the samsung is superior in features minus the vastly superior iphone touchscreen.

Any further ideas much appreciated.

Just a thought but have you tried running the update twice on the same machine, one immediately after the other.

The first time I tried updating after installing the modem drivers windows was very slow to load the drivers and if it takes too long the first time you can run out of time.

The second time you try it though hopefully the drivers should be cached and the load process should be faster.

Thanks for the idea, but tried that from another thread, that's what got me looking into the modem installation. It's probably something really stupid, but we'll find out sooner or later.

you get that error because you forgotten to install Samsung Modem before running update. if you wish to use another XP box which you know all the while working perfectly to upgrade your firmware, yes you still can do it. steps are:

1) run the HI3 exe first, doesn't matter if you are connected to activesync or not.

2) when you see the upgrade screen appear, plug in your usb cable and immediately hit the reset hole

3) screen will response with few lines and press the Start button immediately.

p/s: do not touch the screen on your omnia as touching screen on the phone will result in ignore checksum error and restarting phone.

just let it run

Thanks. I didn't forget to install the samsung modem, I have tried installing/uninstalling it several times and it suggests that it is installed correctly. However it clearly is not, hence the error.

are there any compatible radio rom image files that i can use with grandprix and if so, how would i use grandprix to just flash the radio only.

Thanks - read that too. I was researching other options when i came across this for Vista which seems not to require the samsung xp modem driver. http://www.samsung-omnia.org/index.php/topic,630.0.html. In the process of downloading the Phillipines DXHH3 for vista, I decided to try another XP laptop.

I hard reset the omnia and removed the sim (no idea why this would make any difference).

I then installed the samsung modem driver (checked device manager but it never appeared at any time in the process).

I installed Activesync which had not been previously installed. (I installed this before the modem driver).

I then ran the HI3 full update and it worked flawlessly flashing the PDA and Radio to HI3.

Now I have no idea why the same steps I seemingly tried on 3 previous boxes did not work and I wish I could point to something i forgot or was different in the setup or process - I can't. An absolute mystery.

Anyway I'm now in the process of restoring a full sprite backup and can once again put the iphone on the shelf . It's a bit worrying to hear that Vodaphone are discontinuing support though ;)

Anyway such is life - it does remind me of all the odd stuff we came across modding the old iphone. Quite frankly I'm not sure why I spend so much time messing around with any of it. :(

Before updating, try exiting all your programs and programs running in the background. Worse come to worse, try this procedure for disabling startup programs and services before updating: Troubleshoot installation problem in Photoshop CS3 Yes I know it's for photoshop but look at 8. Run Photoshop CS3 in a simplified mode. That provides a helpful step-by-step procedure on disabling/enabling startup/services items (assuming of course you haven't tries this method yet ;) ) Since you've already tried on several computers I'm assuming most/all of them shares similar programs that could prevent proper lookup/installation of the modem drivers.

Have you tried building a Virtual Machine. I use VMware 6 with a XP SP1 Virtual Machine to do my ROM upgrades

 my friend, Vista is using another modem driver, you need to get it from http://www.samsungmobile.com/promotion/omnia/index.jsp and choose vista as operating system. also, activesync is for XP, Vista uses Windows Mobile Device Center

Thanks RobF80. Funnily enough I was using Vmware Fusion on one box and moved from that to a native box at one point to make sure Fusion wasn't causing the issue for the modem install. Anyone who used fusion knows that drivers can be an issue.

Reuben. Thanks for the info on the vista driver. I never actually bothered with vista as all forums suggested you needed a xp box. Had i not finally succeeded with the last xp laptop, i would then have found i did ineed require a vista modem driver and might still be looking for it ;). Anyway i've now saved that for future updates.

I did understand the activesync, WMDC issue as i normally use a virtual vista install to sync. Anyway thanks for the link.

Anyway happy flashing :0
