I agree that the omnia is a nice phone and samsung has done a pretty good job. I am overall happy with the phone and how it all hangs together.

I suppose that my frustration with this phone is knowing how close this phone is to being amazing - but just falls short. I have a friend with a iphone 3G - and we often compare - bragging about the features of the phones. This should be a discussion that the omnia comes out a clear winner..... but it doesn't. As soon as you go near the album view on the player or are unable to launch any cool programs via widgets (cause samsung won't let us add any!) the phone quickly loses its gloss. Admittedly, this is comparing the best features of the iphone against the worst of the omnia. But with not too much effort on samsung's side these weaknesses could fixed.

Its still a good phone - but I would like samsung to fix these aspects then we would have the top end phone which holds its own against any competition. :D

Omnia has the edge on most points, but here are some tips on how you can totally blow Iphone away by adding some extras.

Add Winterface and you can easily launce any apps, settings or files from the new start up screen. (And yes, it even have optional slide lock too)

(Or if you really dig the startup Iphone looks, then try Iphonz .. which by the way is free)

About players, give one or all of these a go...

- Slide 2 Play (S2P) (Visually stunning presentation of album covers/art .. which by the way is free)

- Pocket Player (Great music player with a full specter of options and functions)

- Kinoma Play (Great for streaming media, nice interface, good on video and audio)

- CorePlayer Plays a wide array of codecs in both audio and video.

Its not that I have Iphone envy - or particularly like the iphone launcher. I am quite happy with the concept of widgets as the primary interface for a device - I just think samsung have done a bad job of implementing it. There is a guy over at xda developers creating his own version (FEWidgets) which allows you to create your own, has lots of widgets already and he has only been developing it for a week. have a play and you will quickly imagine what the samsung widgets could have been. see:

I think it's the fact that samsung has come so close with the standard programs included with the phone - but seems to have fallen short.

By the way, I don't think that any of the players are without there problems. I used to love S2P on my old gigabyle - but it doesn't deal well with 10 gig of music. It causes the visual presenation of music to be not so stunning .

well, if you go to the album captured by the phones camera, omnia will be a "clear" winner (pun intended)

if only samsung would release the framework for their widgets, i imagine hundreds of widgets will br created and it will be one strong selling point of omnia

Agreed, it would be great to be able to add new and customized widgets to the Omnia screen)

The strange thing is that Samsung apparently is going to release a SDK for the widget interface of Samsung M880 Pixon in the first quarter of 2009.
