Camera woes

Although I recognize that the camera on the Omnia is not in the ballpark of the N95 8GB, I've resigned myself to that fact and was nonetheless somewhat pleased with the results in general.

However, I recently upgraded to DXHI1, applied the "camera upgrade" trick and got the feeling that the colors seem more washed out now than with previous ROMs. Is it just me?

Also, it irks me that the flash is completely useless on the Omnia. Why have a flash at all? Is there a way to either tone down the intensity of the actual flash or a way to improve the washout factor in the pictures after they're taken? Or are we lost here because they put in a LED that was too strong and also happened to recess it further than the faceplate on the camera lens so that the light is captured by that every single time, regardless of the LED strength?

Last, but not least. I mentioned it before, but people didn't seem to understand my point. A very basic function on the N95 was the ability to save the pictures in the correct orientation (landscape or portrait) depending on input from the accelerometer. This was a built in function. And no, I do not mean that I want the camera app to present in portrait mode, what I'm looking for is for the Omnia to recognize that I'm holding the camera virtically when I take a picture, and adjust the saved jpeg to present itself in portrait orientation without having to do so manually with Photo Editor or other computer software. Anybody know of a way to do this? Is Samsung so intensely focused on getting GPS tagging right that they don't realize that this very basic, simple function would make our picture-taking lives sooo much easier?

Oh, and after last, but getting close to least. What was Samsung thinking by making it impossible to set brightness, saturation, etc. and have those settings retained when closing and reopening the camera app? Is there any way to retain these settings through a hack?

not entirely related, but may i ask a favor? take a picture of white wall, or a white paper, preferably without a flash, and see if the picture have a greenish tint on the lower left side? its one of my camera woes.

i have actually turned off the flash, pictures even in low light conditions are not all that bad.

totaly agree with u Quist09,

omnia pic sucks with flash photograhy....at night, better use without flash ( my personel prefrence ) hope Samsung boy's will came out with a better rom for flash photograf soon....

I personnally hate accelorometer on my N95, most of the time i want to take picture horizontal but the result is vertical especially when the object on the ground. Thing that sucks the most that's the only accelerometer's function on N95 and nothing else. it cant even rotate the screen automatically.

I prefer omnia without auto rotate my picture, where i can have truly WYSIWYG (what you see on the display is what picture suppose to be, not otherwise.

Btw, to get good picture with flash, make sure the subject is 1 meter away but not more than 2 meter.

Agree with that on the N95. It's a shame Nokia couldn't have a setting to disable it. Maybe it did, never got around to looking for it. If you're still on the N95, you could try Rotateme or a number of other 3rd party apps that use its accelerometer.

I'm still waffling as to whether I'll use the autorotate feature of the Omnia for the screen display, but there's all this energy going into getting GPS tagging ready (a feature I'll basically NEVER use) while I almost daily have to change the orientation of my pics manually (and sometimes using the software on my Vista machine doesn't want to stick, so the pics bounce back to landscape when I'm showing a slide show). Aaarrrgghh.

I'll try the 1-2 meter trick, but sometimes it's hard to get a 3-year-old to stand still.

On the more recent ROMs from Secany's ROM thread you can apparently upgrade the camera app by entering *#2470# from the phone app and then wait 2 minutes.

On other threads, I've been advised to set sharpness to +2 and brightness to -1 for the best results on stills and to be sure to disable autofocus for video filming.

That said, I'm not sure any of these have any real effect and the latter need to be entered every time you start the camera to use them (i.e. they are part of the settings I'm complaining about not being saved when you close the camera app).

just want to verify if this is really a problem, or specific to a ROM, and if its heat related, because the greenish tint seems to be originating from the part of phone that heats the most, seems cooling down the phone reduces the tint.

actually you can make it rotate automatically. you have to update your nokia n95. go to settings and change it to automatic rotate.

on my n95 it rotates automatically

Sorry. Didn't want to reply until I had a chance to try it. I don't really notice it on mine, but I haven't been able to test in proper lighting. Looking at the pics from the other thread, that almost looks like an issue with the photo chip, although it is certainly something that software could and should be able to correct.
