Guest AKOYLINI Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 (edited) hello as i can see if the omnia is in flight mode the gps not working,is this possible to fix it? thank you Edited October 11, 2008 by AKOYLINI
Guest mobilehappy Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 (edited) hello as i can see the if the omnia is in flight mode the gps not working,is this possible to fix it? thank you That would defeat the flight mode purpose...since flight mode turns of the receiver and transmitter functions so that your device will not interfere with other electronic devices..like for instance airplane navigation. Guest adzrm Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 how would a gps interfere??gps is ony receiving, it's not sending any electromagnetic wave...
Guest AKOYLINI Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 so is this possible to fix it? i want to work the gps in the flight mode

Guest mjed2006 Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 Start which ever GPS navigation software you are using BEFORE entering FLIGHT MODE. I have the same issue with the Omnia as my car uses rSAP to communicate with the phone and turns the Flight Mode on. However, I found that if you try to use the GPS with the phone in Flight Mode it does not always operate (or at least takes an age to find the satelites), but if you start the GPS app before you go to Flight Mode there does not seem to be an issue. Worked for me!

Guest Massive Attack Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 (edited) using GPS inside a flying airplane is illegal, so just be careful. Edited October 12, 2008 by Massive Attack
Guest Ingvarr Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 (edited) using GPS inside a flying airplane is illegal, so just be careful. Its no more illegal than using a laptop. Its allowed during cruise phase of flight. GPS is a passive system, its not transmitting anything. Though all civilian GPS receivers have restriction on max altitude and speed, so it most likely won't work anyway (on cruise phase at least, and on takeoff/landings they require you to turn off all electronic devices). Guest mobilehappy Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 List over which airlines allow and disallow the use of GPS in flight.
Guest Ingvarr Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 (edited) I suggest you switch idiot mode on. "I am not using GPS (receiver), I am just using google maps in my PDA" :D Though they can switch idiot mode on too "You are using the cellphone, and using cell phones are forbidden during any stage of flight" Edited October 12, 2008 by Ingvarr

There is nothing to be "careful" about. You are doing nothing criminal or dangerous. If they will forbid it - well, ok than. If you want to, you can argue, if you don't - just turn it off. Guest tropolite Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 I work in a remote location where there's no phone signal at all (remote Australia). There's times I'd like to use GPS while keeping flight mode on (why have the phone 'on' when there's no signal). So thanks mjed2006 for the heads up on turning on the phone, starting GPS, then switch back to flight mode. While on the subject of airline travel, you're allowed to use bluetooth A2DP sets for music while flying right? Just need to turn off on takeoff and landing? Cheers

Do you really know the abbreviations EMC? I guess that NO. <_< Electromagnetic Compatibility. Search for it passive system... Yes it is, if your GPS is a stone. Edited October 12, 2008 by eRoS08

Guest eRoS08 Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 (edited) It's hard to explain  but you can consider wikipedia as a very short introduction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_compatibility The laws considers all of these effects as possible interferences. If you'd bother to read what exactly I wrote, I meant that GPS receiver produces no more EMR than laptop (in fact a laptop would produce about 2 orders of magnitude more). Just because GPS device its a god damn radio receiver with a small computer to handle the user interface  I just know that a lot of people imagine that GPS receivers somehow "communicate with satellites" when they do not, they only listen. Guest WearTheFoxHat Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 This is similar to being able to use phones at forecourts ... you're not allowed to ... so don't! Some airlines are doing work now to allow people to use mobiles onboard to make and receive calls. I think with all the terrorist paranoia, the flight crew will look at an all in one gadget, and not even understand flight mode. They think its a phone and its turned on, so will complain until you turn it off. If you argue back about it being in flight mode, it's more likely to end up in hot water with the airline, than to get you anywhere. The question is raised about why you would really need to use a GPS during a commercial flight, and a paranoid air steward will think the same. Personally I've had enough hassle from airlines to last me a lifetime, and take the route of least hassle when it comes to flying these days.
Guest ldbs Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Hello, I think some of you are jumping the gun the ORIGINAL poster didn't say that he is going to use the GPS on a plane. he asked about FLIGHT MODE - turning offer transmision of gsm etc etc. doesn't mean he is going to use it in a plane. and WHY WOULD YOU want to use a GPS device on a plane lol will it tell you to turn left in 300 miles? lol  thats just utterly dumb. but anyway. i just tried it on my omnia. flight mode, and no working. though it works on my Nokia n82.
Guest Neil5459 Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Out of curiosity I have tried GPS in an aircraft (during cruise flight) using both my Diamond, Trinity and Ameo, and as long as you are by a window it works. The 'you are over the speed limit' warnings get a bit tiresome  , and the speed is too great for route navigation to work, but in passive mode it can be interesting. I've not been asked to turn it off by any RyanAir attendant. All these phones were able to initiate the GPS receiver while Flight Mode was turned on, so the issue under discussion may well be a specific Omnia trait.
Guest Z Cheema Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 I have used an old Medion PPC (win5) with FALK Navigator on a plane and that worked very well showed exactly where I was flying over Europe, until I got to the alps and the map run out. Tom Tom did not work to well as the speed of the plane is to high and it gives up.
