Guest requiem87 Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Hi. I am going to upgrade from dxhg4 to dxhj1, and wandered if anyone could make a guide on how to do this. Here's what i have done so far. Step 1 : Install ActiveSync 4.5 from http://www.samsungmobile.com/promotion/omnia/index.jsp Step 2 : Install Samsung modem driver from same site Step 3 : Connect your phone to PC via Samsung Mobile cable. Step 4 : Backup your data SPB Backup Step 5 : backup the files you want to keep Step 6 : Remove memory card and sim-card. Step 7 : Hard-reset the phone. Step 8 : Install Grand Prix 1.5.2 from http://www.modaco.com/content/i900-omnia-h...re-version-fix/ Step 9 : Download the DXHJ1 rom from same thread. Is this right so far, and what do i do from here? Do i need to flash to another fw before the dxhj1 or can i flash directly from dxhg4 to dxhj1?? Cheers
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Step 1 : Backup your data. 'My Storage' will not be wiped, but the main memory will. Step 2 : Install ActiveSync 4.5 from http://www.samsungmobile.com/promotion/omnia/index.jsp Step 3 : Install Samsung modem driver from same site Step 4 : Install Grand Prix 1.5.2 from http://www.modaco.com/content/i900-omnia-h...re-version-fix/ Step 5 : Download the DXHJ1 rom from same thread. Step 6 : Connect your phone to PC via Samsung Mobile cable. Step 7 : Run update Step 8: Press reset pin Step 9: Press 'Start' in updater Step 10: Wait patiently Step 11: When update has finished and device has booted, hard reset. Step 12: Party on down! P
Guest requiem87 Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 OK, so i don't really need the grandprix then? just do everything from the built-in updater in i900DXHJ1.exe???
Guest hyson Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Is a hard reset necessary before update?

Guest requiem87 Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I soft-resetted the phone and it started okay, and the pda was upgraded but not phone. I inserted the sim-card and flashed again. That worked!! Posting new step-by step for n00bs like me! Step 1 : Backup your data. 'My Storage' will not be wiped, but the main memory will. Guest grypenigma Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Only AFTER upgrade... P Dear Paul, Other thread saying that we should disable/turn off any running antivirus/firewall etc. True? thanks Paul.
Guest bpivk Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Dear Paul, Other thread saying that we should disable/turn off any running antivirus/firewall etc. True? thanks Paul. Always true. Sometimes some antivirus or firewall software decides (in the middle of the flashing process) that it should ask you if you allow this. This in turn disables the connection with your phone (stops it in the middle of the flashing process) and bricks your phone. It doesn't hapen regulary but it does hapen so it's beter to be safe then sorry. Besides... it won't hurt your coputer if its without protection when you're flashing.
Guest shokaikel Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Hi I've just received my Omnia today from Orange. It is the 16gb version. Do I need to upgrade from dxhg4 to dxhj1 or is it already installed?

I have update my ROM twice so far to HI3 and now to HJ1 - both times I have not used step 8 (i.e. pressing reset pin) - I run the Updater, plug the phone in, turn the phone on and then the updater springs to life and I click Start. Both times seems to have worked very well - so far! *gulp* So, is pressing the reset button essential?

Do I need to upgrade from dxhg4 to dxhj1 or is it already installed? Settings--> Sysytem --> Version to check what version you are using. Then read Secany's thread about the different ROM versions available to decide if you want to upgrade. Personally, I found it worth it. HG4 even had a bug where pressing and holding the "end" key didn't lock the device. As I say, go through the main thread to understand what you are getting into and then decide! Finally, one part of the upgrading process which is not covered too extensively is how it can cause palpitations and sweaty hands! Good luck!

Guest KingKoresh Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Thanks! So what version did you upgrade to and what are the benefits of it? I now have J1. I suggest you start here (http://www.modaco.com/content-page/272126/secanys-rom-research-thread-new-dxhj1/page/1040/) and plough your way through all the pages - will give you a good feel for both the process and what to expect with the upgrade - I did!

Guest grypenigma Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 do we need to key in the code to flash the camera firmware as well when we are upgrading to J1?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 'Turning it on' achieves the same as pressing the reset pin... P

The reset pin is just instead of that. Point is just to get to se the samsung omnia logo (and bootloader) while the updater is running.
