Hey everyone! I am and I have been a Blackberry user for a really long time. Now i'd like to change a little bit. I'm a big texter. I write about 70 emails a day, facebook and IM a lot. I'm a little bit worried that this won't be the phone for me. I've been reading some testimonials and they say that in portrait mode it's not the best, better to use the Blackberryesq keyboard, and then in landscape mode, the full qwerty works great. Is that true? I've been using the Blackberry Curve for 14 months. I've had the iphone (in which the keyboard worked fine). I love this phone's design. I would love to have it. But i'm thinking about typing .... is it ok?

in my opinon ! why would you get a stupid looking or a bulky ohone just to get a QWERTY keyboard when you get a great I mean it GREAT Keypoard with heptic feedback . I rarely get the letters wrong when i type sepcially in the landscape mode ! just PERFECT TOUCH KEYBOARD

My advice would be...

Go into a shop and test it...before you get stuck into a 18 month contract..

do a comparison...take you BB with you..

You can also install another keyboard for use in portrait mode.

Resco Keyboard Pro is a good option for portrait mode. (Kinda looks and acts like Iphones keyboard) (And there are plenty other options out there to try out too, like ZoomBoard, TouchPal, FingerTouch, PocketCM Keyboard and many more )

In landscape mode Omnias keyboard is great.

And since Omnia can run any apps in landscape mode you can actually use that for all your typing if you like.

IMHO Omnia's keyboard is absolutely useless and has a bad habit of popping up over apps etc... Compared to BB Omnia is yards ahead but no hardware keypad/keyboard. I recommend TouchPal or Resco keyboard, both of these apps (once your accustomed) will have you typing emails and txt msgs alot faster than the BB.

Coming from a HW keyboard type PDA (838pro, TyTnII) to the virtual kb type like the Omnia, its really frustrating and it would be wrong (IMHO) to think that virtual kkb can replace actual ones for speed and accuracy. Lets not kid ourselves! I love the Omnia for its speed and reliability but every day I still yearn for kb pda (waiting for Xperia).

I see you TYPE a lot every day. Dun get into the same predictament like I did. Test it out first

I can see the majority of you like the keyboard, and that's great. I was thinking of getting this phone because of it's features. I am getting this phone out of a contract, for about 340 euros, so like $500, no contract.

One other question, I do a lot of typing in different languages. Maybe, for example, I'm typing on MSN messenger, and I have to carry out multiple conversations in different languages (Spanish, English, Italian and French). How easy is it to switch keyboard languages? On a HW keyboard there's no need for it. But with auto-correction and dictionary and such, like on the Apple Iphone, I had to install the languages, because it would always correct my words in different languages! Is it easy to change languages?

is there a CAB program that makes texting easier in T9 mode please?

I'm always missing keys and the space doesn't seem to acknowlege a touch!

First off, the Omnia comes with loads of different languages installed in XT9 by default - no need for any additional cab. You simply change that by choosing options from the input entry menu. If you want, I'm sure you could write a Mortscript that would tab through these on the push of a button.

I write in Swedish and English and, like you, am a heavy emailer. I found that the portrait keyboard allowed me to get close to computer-like speed with some practice and the XT9 autocorrection. The landscape keyboard was too close to the Send softkey in it's default layout, so I modded it. See my post (#26), here:

If the languages you use need special characters (i.e. non-ASCII), you might try a variant of my mod, which still has the haptic feedback and excellent XT9 solution (Resco and the others do not).

Now, I never miss a key and don't accidently hit send anymore. Almost just as fast on the phone as I am on my desktop or laptop. Used to have the Blackberry-like Nokia E61 and the HTC TyTN foldout keyboard, and this (with my mod) is FAR better.

Haptic feedback is really just a gimic and there's a myriad of 3rd party SIP that support T9 input. TouchPal for instance uses gestures to change, character, numeric and Alpha in the one key nothing is faster for SIP! Also this SIP uses left to right gestures to switch from, ABC, 123, QWERTY, T9 etc etc... Try it and you'll never go back.

Nothing wrong with providing yourself with a choice, so in addition to Samsungs versions i have added Resco Keyboard Pro, ZoomBoard and TouchPal.

Now i just use the one which strikes my fancy at that particular point in time :lol:

The truth is that I'm actually excited about getting the Omnia! I went to the phone store yesterday to play with it, and the QWERTY is going to take time to get used to, but on the other hand the blackberry pearl suretype keyboard is actually really easy! So I think I'll use that while getting used to the qwerty :lol:.

I've amassed some questions, if you wouldn't mind answering! I'd really appreciate it :D.

1) I've had a WM 6.1 device before, but I didn't like it at all (the actual device, because it was slow, small and the services I had for it was HORRIBLE). So I had an alternative pushmail for it, already given by Vodafone. I'm going to NOT get that service, and just get a generic internet service, and configure my emails to be checked every half hour, is that possible? I never investigated that, since my last WM 6.1 device had "pushmail esq" email.

2) I've read SO many reviews, and I've heard a lot about the battery... Firstly, I'll buy another one, because i'm the type of person that will carry an extra battery and leave it at work or if I'm going to have a long day, take it in my pocket or backpack or something.... but what I'd like to know is how does the battery hold? I mean, like I said in the last posts, I'm a very heavy texter, will a battery last me a full day? I don't use 3g a lot, so I'd put it into GPRS (since I mostly just use MSN Messenger, and send emails). I read that people have been getting 10 hours of talk time in GSM mode. Like I said, I'm mostly just using APPS on the phone and not calling. SEnding emails, playing around basically. lol. So does the battery hold a good day in 3G? or will I be throwing it directly into GPRS?

I tried Resco KB , but its English dictionary ( word suggestion) stooped working because of the xt9 I think.

I used to use it a lot on the TyTn1 , but here its dictionary is not working.

Any solution fro that ??

what about other KB like Touchpal ? do they have the same problem with xt9 ?

Installed touchpal but in the landscape , it is very small , the same sizs as in the portrait ?

I probably set it up wrong at the installation . any recomendded setting ?

I like Resco Keyboard too but have stopped using it because it's word suggestion doesn't work. Resco don't seem to have a fix yet, in fact a couple of posts on their forum has yielded no responce.
