Guest valerebel Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I am thinking of getting an Omnia from UK VODA on a £35pm on a 12m contract but via Quidco getting £150 cashback. I am not too familiar with this phone and after reading many reviews I am uncertain, so I am looking for advice please. Ideally I'd like to use it for navigation but I'm not sure what comes as standard. What satnav packages are able to use the built in GPS and what are the chances of TomTom 7 using the built in GPS I wonder? Currently I use an Ipaq RX3715 but if you let the battery go totally flat (main and backup) you lose everything; does the same thing happen with the Omnia? Please guys, and gals, what is your honest opinion of this phone. Thx in advance. valerebel
Guest drcarlos Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Believe Tomtom will work on the Omnia, but I got mine last week and on the recommendation of the guys on here has got the iGo8 software runs nicely and uses the built in GPS no troubles. AFAIK Windows Mobile doesn't suffer the same affliction as the ipaq. I let my old SPV run flat a few times and never lost anything. The only thing I am coming to terms with slowly is the touchscreen as I am more used to conventional keypad based winmo phones. As you are coming from an ipaq you should have no problems. I showed it to the Father in law at the weekend (he has had HTC Blue Angel, Wizard, Magician and TYtnII, currently using N95 and Jesus Phone) and he asked what OS it was running and he couldn't believe it was Winmo. Tomtom 7 is running extremely well on it and I must say that in landscape mode it's more or less as good as a standalone tomtom. I have a couple of issues at the moment and checking out different forums it seems that I am not alone with them. The first is Wifi connectivity. My connection is liable to disconnect whenever it feels like for no apparent reason. On trying to re-establish the connection I am informed that the Network Key is incorrect, even though I could have been connected and browsing for half hour! A soft reset usually corrects this. The second is the strength of phone signal that I get on the Omnia. Granted I live in an area which does not have a strong service signal but any of my other phones when used with this Sim get at least '1 bar' and never drop a call. Unfortunately the Omnia sometimes loses service altogether and frequently drops calls. I'm hoping that these two problems may be fixed in a forthcoming UK Rom upgrade that I've been reading about. Other than that it handles most things with ease. Hope this helps.
Guest Jibreil Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Well if you are looking at a high-end Windows Mobile device which packs itself with 90% of the Nokia high-end models. Then Omnia is the phone for you. Omnia is considered superior in hardware specs comparatively to any Windows Mobile device in the present market. You can feel free to do your own comparison with many mobile sites across the web

I'm glad it's not just me! The signal strength issue is almost a deal breaker for me which is a shame as I love the phone. I'm sitting at my desk and my SE K810 shows 5 bars and my Omnia is lucky if it gets 1! Both on UK Vodafone BTW.
Guest MBA140 Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 The thing I find most baffling about the signal strength is its second to second variability. I can be sat at home with 5 bars and the next second none. I have to say my old HTC trinity was just the same. I wonder how much is down the network as my Nokia E51 often struggles on t-mobile too. Where I live and work, o2 is always solid even inside my work where t-mobile just cannot penetrate. If it wasn't for the year left on my contract and web'n'walk - I'd move to them. Otherwise it's the best PDA I've owned and I've owned at least 15!
