Guest ktgohdt125 Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 last night i left my omnia dried out its batt ( with gps and touch player app running ) after i fall asleep, this morning i plug it to the wall adaptor to charge it but i notice there are no Red LED...... i left it charge more than 7 hours and could feel a bit warm at the batt panel area.... i tried to on it but unsuscessfull  :D ;) , i take out the batt and measure the voltage and get a 4.10v reading and i belive the batt has been charge, put all together and tried to on again and still fail...... :o :P take out batt and waited ten minute thinking of discharging its internal batt also come to negetive result!!! :P :D :D please take note.... NEVER FULLY DISCHARGE UR BATTERY...... my advice!!!! any one could help me out??? thanks in advance

Guest balles Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 (edited) Do you have some news? Edited November 9, 2008 by balles
Guest balles Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 I had the same problem. My omnia discharged while being on and connected to the charger (yes, strange but real). The battery was too low and I went to sleep with the phone on and connected to the wall charger. Result? Next morning it was off and it refused to charge. My guess, I am may be wrong, is that since the charging process is done by reading some data info from the cable, this processing needs some amount of energy. When the phone is completely discharged, it is not possible to process the data and though to charge!! B) It happened to me two days ago and after several tries for charging, I gave up. I still have the phone and today it started... for one minute. The battery was so low that it automatically stopped after booting Windows. I must precise that the phone does not really refuses to charge. It charges jut during several seconds. After that, no more charging. If you leave the phone during several minutes without charging, after connecting the phone to the charger it accepts to charge for several additional seconds. My guess is that if the phone is not connected to the charger, it uses the battery to charge this "booting process". Am I right?? I don't know, but I will still keep going using the following procedure to unblock my phone: 1. Connect the phone to the charger for the very few seconds it accepts to charge. 2. Disconnect the phone and leave it during several seconds for this, my guess, low-level booting process to get some power. 3. Repeat since step 1 several times. I hope this will unblock the situation. If tomorrow it has not improved, I will go to a technical service. I will keep you informed. I also plan to buy a desktop charger to avoid this from happening any more. A possible solution? Please give any information you may have on this point. Javier
Guest balles Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 Hi, I have good and bad news: - The good news is that my procedure works!! I succeeded in unblocking my "apparently" dead i900. - The bad news is that the charging scheme I imagined in my previous post *must* be either right, or very close to the reality. This means that you should never, never allow your i900 to discharge completely. Otherwise, you risk to have lots of pain to recover your omnia back because to charge, and resuming, the phone needs a bit of power to "accept" to charge. Honestly, I had fear for my phone. I think that Samsung did a very st...d mistake by soft deciding whether to charge or not. They should solve this problem either by providing a new firmware (if possible), either by recalling the phones already sold. We can all be a potential victim of this bug. Hope this helps! Javier
Guest 3shirts Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 Deliberately discharging is pointless. People do it as a hangover from old nicad batteries but li-ion ones don't suffer from memory effect so you do as well to just keep them as fully charged as you can. I bung my phone on to charge over night most nights and have done for my last 4 or 5 phones. Never seen any drop in battery life
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted November 9, 2008 Report Posted November 9, 2008 Li-ion still have a memory effect of sorts but it is much less pronounced. Attempting to fully discharge a Li-ion battery can damage the batteriers capacitance which will seriously shorten it's life.

B) I am from an electronic background, but i have forgot loads of stuff, work in a different capacity now. I have fully discharged my phone a few times, only after flashing. I haven't experienced this problem, and hopefully won't. I fully discharge to allow a full charge with new ROM running? Is this wrong of me? I will now consider, not running phone to empty after new install of ROM, but just to nearly empty. The basic theory above about it needing some power to allow a data communication, sounds very plausible. But i know from past that as soon as a charger connects to battery/phone the phone should power up regardless as phone is running off charger? This has me concerned. I run a Li-ion in my radio controlled car, and this issue hasn't been heard of (to me). Anything anyone can point me to on the net? Some research or something? Thanks peeps.
Guest 3shirts Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 Fine, don't trust me huh B) Here is a good research article: http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm Specifically this part: "Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. "
Guest finaldestiny Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 (edited) ^^^ I remember there was an article on wikipedia about this, but i'm far too lazy to find it back right now. sorry B) Also I've twice managed to completely drain my battery, for the sake of testing how long it took to fully charge and how long i could push it with wifi, bluetooth and video blazing. Funny thing is the first time i did it, my omnia didn't want to turn on either. I plugged it in and everything, pressed the button and nothing. Then I calmed down, took out the battery (as it was feeling pretty hot) for about 15 seconds then pushed it back in. Thankfully it turned back on this time and also the second time i tried it but thats a lesson learnt there. Won't be trying that again anytime in a hurry. Edit: This was supposed to be added since last night but i kept getting an IPS error or something like that. Strange. Edited November 10, 2008 by finaldestiny

Thanks, i actually found the article on Wiki but it was quite long, didn't have much time, so only read a page or 2. But it said what you said. I did believe you, because i thought about it for a while and this thread, made me ask and need to put to bed. Thanks. Quick read of that link methinks. My theory was when you do fully discharge your phone whether on purpose or if it it simply dies. As soon as it dies, it starts a little recovery, as batteries do. Just enough to initiate a connection for power and data?? No mind.
Guest ChandanS Posted February 2, 2009 Report Posted February 2, 2009 What if I attempt to take the battery out charge it externally with an 'universal charger' and put it back? Will it work?
Guest 3shirts Posted February 2, 2009 Report Posted February 2, 2009 What if I attempt to take the battery out charge it externally with an 'universal charger' and put it back? Will it work? This is a bad idea. Those chargers do not have the 'intelligence' to stop charging so they will overcharge and seriously damage the battery capacitance. I had one of them for my N95 and after leaving my battery to charge one night, it would last no more than a few hours after that. The phone detects the battery level and will stop charging when it's full so is the only safe way to do it.

Actually I did this last night. Morning I was late for office so ran for it and after reaching found that the phone wont start up. managed a charger there but it refused to charge. I freaked out and waited till coming home. I have a universal charger that can charge any battery. charged the battery for about 10 minutes with it then omnia stated up with the battery and I was relieved. Those who face over discharge problem can follow this. I also tried balles' instruction but was not quite clear about the durations and intervals. But my omnia's condition was terrible (it was being charged for less than 1 sec and refused to charge and it repeated) I really freaked out. Thanks to my antique universal charger. Technically it charges the battery upto the required voltage that is needed for omnia to start up, as simple as that. But samsung should look into it.

I have charged my batteries with an external USB charger a few times and they are still working just fine. Makes me wonder, how does one charge additional batteries without external charger? It doesn't make sense to me to keep swapping batteries in/out the phone to charge them. You can always *safely* charge the empty battery in external charger for a few hours only, to give it a good start, then put it in the *dead* phone and attempt to turn on and charge fully. Makes sense to me...
Guest ChandanS Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Yes thats what I did, successfully.

Yes they would be good for that but to be honest if you left the battery in the phone charging for long enough it would probably come alive. It probably is taking a charge just not showing any sign because of how low the battery has become. Just never leave them on a universal charger for a prolonged period
