Apologies for not answering your question, but why not use GPS software such as TomTom or iGo 8?

You can use Mobile GMaps for this purpose (look here: http://www.mgmaps.com/). It is a tool widely supported and it lets you download Google, Yahoo, Live and other sources' maps for offline surfing.

Have they overcome the legal enforcement preventing the use of this with Google Maps? Also reports are suggesting that all recent versions of Google Maps will remove mgmaps from your system- have you any experience of that?

There is another app that allows you to cache Google Maps content for later viewing, thougb if at sea you would have to down load a lot of Google data! This is called Tracky and is aimed at off-road navigation. Costs €30

Neil,

I have roughly looked at Tracky and it seems very interesting!

Concerning the legal aspects between MGMaps and Google Maps, I think that Google does not authorize the download of their maps legally for any purpose, so, as far as I see, the legal aspect does not concern just MGMaps.

For the question on whether MGMaps and Google Maps can cohabit in the same PDA, actually I don't know. I used MGMaps when I didn't have an internet connection in my phone. Today I have 3G, so I use Google Maps directly.

Regards,

Javier

I have Tracky myself and I really like it. The current version does not look very nice on the Omnia (due to the odd screen resolution), but sometime this week there will be a new version released that perfectly supports the Omnia. I have been in contact with the developers in the last couple of weeks and have tested succesfully a beta version.

I will post when the release is out!

Thanks Javier  I wonder if commercial companies like Tracky do pay some sort of license fee to Google?

Apparently Googlemaps 2.1 and 2.2 both remove any app with 'gmap' in the title :D

Yes!!! I do this all the time. Use a WiFi connection to view all the maps you need at every zoom level that you'll need, and they are cached on your device for later use if you have enough memory.
