Modifying the images in secstres96 disables Today 2?

I've modified some of the icons for the Samsung Today 2 plugin (secstres96.dll). However, whenever I would overwrite the same file in the \windows directory and try to enable the Today 2 plugin, it would disappear from the plugins list. Oddly enough, some of you are aware that copying the black/silver doesn't disable the plugin. I was wondering if anyone here has successfully customized and used the plugin? Does secst.dll/WM perform some sort of file check to secstres96.dll before WM thinks it's a valid plugin? If so any way around it? Thanks :D
